Dying from COPD

My mother recently died from COPD. I found it hard to watch her struggle to breathe. I notice though that she would sleep a lot during the day and barely eat. Her lower body was swollen severely around her ankles and legs. The sad part is that she would sit in her chair constantly to do anything! Would there be more underlying causes for this many of the problems she has experienced?
