Involuntary fast breathing when I'm crying.

Hi everyone, sometimes when I am crying so much or i really want to cry and i try to stop it, i start inhaling air way too fast and i can't speak properly. It happened quite a few times and I'm guessing that other people experience the same thing too sometimes. But what is going on when that happens? I try to stop breathing fast so that i can talk but i cant help it and then i make a fool out of myself. Even when i actually stop crying, the really fast inhaling continues for a while and then i start shaking like mad. It's almost like fast hiccups one after the other but im just inhaling air. Does any one know why that happens? thankyou.

After you have had oxygen deficiency during crying you may start hyperventilation. Due to hyperventilation you take too much oxygen and lose too much hydrogen dioxide. The gase balance in your blood is disturbed. That is why you start shaking.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

When crying the tears get into the nose through the nasolacrimal duct. This in turn can cause clogging and blockage of the nose. So, the option left is to breathe with the mouth and we try to gulp in air in between sobs. This happens to everybody.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
