Sudden shortness of breath

I have had shortness of breath for the last tow years.  I have went through numerous test and a Nissen fundoplication.  I have been told I have mild ashma.  I was a previous smoker for 27 years.  I have read up on ashma and my symtoms don't quite measure up with ashma.  I have constant shortness of breath at rest.  I do go through some periods it is not quite so bad.  I have phlegm, some days worse then others.  I have a lot of headaches.  I feel I have spasms in my throat due to the phlegm.  I have had a lot of gastric isues and high tryglycerides.  I was wondering if somehow these things could all be connected.  Before this started I was living a normal life.  I now walk on eggshells on how I will feel daily.  This  is a terrible way to live.  I wish I could get some answers.  I have even went to a holistic Dr.  which didn't seem to help either.  I just want to get back to my old self.

I do get chest tightness.  I really don't cough the phlegm up most of the time.  It is just there.  I find myself constantly clearing it out of my throat.  I feel this is what worsens the breathing issues at time.  I don't believe I have ever had a methacoline challenge test.  I have had numerous PFTs and Spirometry test.  I have also had many additonal tests.  I do have GERD.  I had a ph probe done after my nissen and it showed my reflux was a lot better.  I seem to feel the same though.  It is really frustrating.  I do get a cough sometimes but it is usually a dry cough.

What do you mean you have a lot of phlegm? Are you coughing up a lot of phlegm? Then that is related to chronic bronchitis, especially that you have a long smoking history. Spasms in the throat? Maybe you have VCD (vocal chord dysfunction), look it up and see what you think of the symptoms. Mucous in the throat can be due to GERD or Post nasal drip. Even Gerd can give breathing issues. For some their only symptom is a dry cough. What other symptoms do you have outside of shortness of breath? Most people with lung issues often have a cough, chest tightness, and wheezing is certainly common. If you question your asthma diagnosis, then did you did a "methacholine" challenge test? If you tested positive for this one, you have definitely asthma..
