Frequent Urination after Exposure

I had protected vaginal sex with a massage therapist about 18 months ago.  The condom did not come off and did not break.  I never had any obvious symptoms of STD, but became concerned about Herpes later after I learned that condoms do not always prevent this.  Had a full set of tests with tstd.org and was negative for HIV, Herpes, Hep C, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhea.  That was about nine months ago.  However, in the weeks before the testing I was treated for a bad chronic sinus infection with several weeks of antibiotic therapy.

About a week ago I went to my urologist because of much more frequent urination, including a strong feeling of urgency a few times.  I also have what seems like a mild case of urethritis.  I've noticed occasional twinges of pain in the tip of my penis, but there has been no discharge and it does not burn when I urinate.  The urologist performed a through exam and found nothing obvious, but has ordered a full set of tests.  He also proscribed Cipro oral 500 mg twice a day for five days, which I have already completed, and still have symptoms.

I am worried that I passed a bacterial STD to my SO shortly after exposure, then had my infection cleared up by the treatment for sinus infection, and then got it back from my SO recently.  The urologist says this is "very unlikely", but I'm very worried, and won't get the test results for a few more days.  I'm convinced I have some sort of infection, and would like to know if there's much of a chance it's not an STD.  Thanks for helping.

Well, saw the doc today, and all the tests came back negative for STDs and HIV.  My PSA is holding steady right around 1, which is also good to know (I'm 48).  Have a new prescription for more antibiotics, and will see him again in two weeks.  I might still have a prostate infection, but of course I'm feeling greatly relieved.

Thank you for your sound advice, and for just being there.  I'll be keeping my fly zipped from now on.  Lesson learned.

You only took cipro?  That would cure gonorrhea, and might cure chlamydia, but its not a preferred treatment.  If you come back positive for chlamydia, you should ask for azithromycin or doxycycline.

Yes, and there was nothing unusual about it.  And yes, I am really only concerned about gonorrhea and chlamydia right now.  Would the antibiotics I took within the past week have cleared those up?

Test results were due back from the lab yesterday, but I won't see the urologist until tomorrow.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi there -

The chances of this being an std are very low.

You are right to test again, but the antibiotics will only affect the testing for gonorrhea, chlamydia and NGU.

Did your doc do a prostate exam?
