Levaquin for persistent Chlamydia / Gonorrhea

After discovering greenish discharge in my underwear in the morning, I went to my doctor who prescribed me the usual course of 1 g of Azithromycin and 1 400 mg of Cefixime for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.  At first my symptoms lessened but later returned.  I waited two weeks before seeing my doctor again who prescribed me the same medication.  I did test positive for Chlamydia.  Again the symptoms receded but again they returned.  This time my doctor prescribed Levaquin (7 days x 500 mg) and 1 shot of Ceftriaxone.  I was re-tested for Chlamydia and don't have the results yet.

I read scary reports of serious side effects of Levaquin.  It's potent but has risks which is why it's given only as a second line of defense.  I'm nervous about taking it and I'm wondering if there are effective alternatives to this.

Yes, I realize people don't usually post anything unless there's a problem.  So for the majority of Levaquin users this drug is safe.  But for the minority, and it appears to be a large group, the side effects are severe.  I checked up on other popular antibiotics outside of this class and didn't find nearly as much bad press as Levaquin and other drugs in this class had.  This is the reason for my reluctance.  I still may need to try it if the alternative doesn't work.

Thanks for your reply.  They tested me for chlamydia but I'm not sure about gonorrhea.  After taking the first round of antibiotics I still tested positive for chlamydia.  I took another round and got retested.  I don't know the results yet but I still experience symptoms after two weeks of taking the medication.  I'm avoiding sex completely until this clears up.

My doctor offered doxycycline as an alternative to Levaquin.  If that doesn't work I can ask him about Erythromycin.

have they tested you for anything besides gonorrhea and chlamydia or are they just throwing things at you to hope something works?

are you avoiding sex completely at this point?

you can use Erythromycin  instead if you aren't comfortable taking the levaquin.

I've been on levaquin a few times, no side effects.  The stuff you read about on the internet is relatively rare.  And, of course, only people with complaints tend to write about it online.  I wouldn't worry.
