negative results for chlamydia what could it be?

Hi Doc,

I have been in a monogamous relationship for 10 years but about 5 weeks ago I had unprotected oral sex, followed by vaginal sex with a condom with a random person. (I know stupid considering the consequences).

About 3 weeks after the incident I started to feel a slight itchiness on my penis and needed to urinate quite frequently. I also noticed a burning sensation when urinating. I saw a doctor who prescribed azithromycin and also took a urine sample to be tested. After taking the antibiotics I started feeling less itchiness and almost no burning when urinating.....

I return to the doctor and the results were negative for chlamydia and gonorrhea. The day after the symptoms seemed to come back again, strong burning of the tip and itchiness...no pain when urinating though.

I had a repeat prescription of  azithromycin so I took it again and it seems to be settling things down again but not entirely.

My questions are:

1. how long does it take for azithromycin to work if it was a false negative.
2. Why do I feel temporary relief only.
3. And most importantly what else could I have or be testing for.

I am depressed and anxious....and would appreciate your advise on my next steps.

Thanks!

You are probably feeling temporary relief because you most likely do not have chlamydia.  Testing for chlamydia is conclusive at one week...

The only other std that you may have been at a very slim risk for was herpes.  You may want to get tested for that.  Or maybe this is a fungal thing?  It is also possible that the additional antibiotics have now caused you to have yeast issues.
