undetected trichomoniasis

Recently, I've been diagnosed with trichomoniasis. This was done by wep mount. After that I was given a 2g single dose of metronidazole. It didn't seem to help because my symptoms did not go away. I went back to a doctor and this time he did a culture test. After 4 days the clinic called me saying that the test came back negative! But since I was still experiencing symptoms, this time they put me on 2g one does of tindamax. Its been a week after I took my meds and I don't feel any improvement. I am desperate because I havethis condition since february of this year and at first. They were testing me for all kinds of std and for which I was always testing negative. Before the wet mount I was tested for trichomoniasis 2 times with culture and everytime they were coming back negative until a wet mount.
How likely it is for a culture test to be false negative? And also is it possible that this is not even a trichomoniasis but something else????my discharge is of no odor, pale yellow in color with a 4.5 ph. I have a very raw almost a burning feeling at all times that seems to be more noticable after my menstruation....and also, I already took 3 doses of 2g metronidazole total, one in february once they told me I had bacterial vaginosis, one in march and the last one a month ago when they noticed a possible trichomonads in my wet mount.
I am desperate..any advice would be really appreciated..:(

you need to see a gyn, not an infectious disease specialist.

Thank you guys...I was adviced by my primary physician to go see an infectious disease specialist since they cannot seem to give me any answers. Well hopefully, I will find out what is causing my symptoms soon.

not all discharge is trich. continue to be seen monthly as needed for your discharge until they get to the bottom of it.

perhaps try a different condom and lube too just in case that is part of the issue for you at this point too.

I will say this....one may be more reliable than the other, but niether are very good.  with a 70% sucess rate....that leaves a lot of room for error.  PCR is the only accurate way to know but it's more pricey.  You can check if your doctor will order it, but even then it may take multiple samples and tests.  This Trich stuff is a tricky thing (no pun intended).  Like I said though, I think after 3 courses of metro/ tindamax, it doesn't sound like Trich anymore.

Good to hear you're having protected sex and protecting your partner.

Keep following up, hopefully they will find something.

Thanks for answering. Yes I have a regular sex partner but it is unlikely that we pass it back and forth since when we do have sex we use condoms. After my first treatment I actually did not have sex for a period of 2 months because it hurt.  And as to what I found out online, culture is more reliable

To answer your question about cultures, yes. they can be unreliable.  Wet mount is probably more reliable.

Also, you didn't answer Grace's question about sex partners.  Do you have a regular partner and has he/ she been tested or treated?  Trich can be passed back and forth.

If you haven't been having sex, it's unlikely this is trach after 3 treatments of antibiotics.  Keep following up with your doc, and Grace is a great resource when it comes to these issues.

Well then I don't know what else it could be...lost all my hope for getting better..don't know what are the chances for trichomonas to go undetected with multiple culture tests...?

it can cause annoying discharge but it isn't a health risk.

Yes..they actually did test me for yeast and bv...everything came back normal with the last test I had done which was a week ago...
I have never heard of an excess of good bacteria causing discharge...can this be a problem???

are they testing for yeast and bv too?

also ask if you have excess 'good' bacterial causing your discharge too. at this point they need to be doing good testing on your discharge to get to the bottom of it for you!

And Grace I appreciate your comment and suggestions. This is mainly why I went to the doc for a check up one more time...

So here I am again with the same story. I went to the health center for another check up and they did another swab to culture it. (that was my 5th one so far)...The test read NEGATIVE for trichomonas. I am just so confused because I dont know what to think about it anymore...I have symptoms that are exactly like those of trich yet no test is detecting it. What is wrong with me????? I am so desperate because I have  tried everything and nothing seems to be helping me....any suggestions???Please help!!!

it's annoying but continue to go back monthly as needed to be seen and retested for vaginitis if you are having vaginal symptoms.  it might take longer than a week until you do feel relief so don't continue treating weekly.  also bv can be hard to get rid of sometimes. you might need to treat for that with more than just oral flagyl too.

do you have a regular partner? if so, have they been treated for trich too?
