there are side affects with any b/c. i had the mirena iud inserted in october 2008 and i absolutely love it. i had the 8 weeks of bleeding afterward and the break through bleeding but now (9 months later) my periods are 3 sometimes 4 days long, no cramping and i don't have to worry about pregnancy. i was horrible with remembering to take the pill and i've heard awful things about the patch and ring so the iud was the best thing for me. i've had no uti's, no weight gain (which again that can be with any b/c). i absolutely love my iud but my doctor did tell me (at least with mirena) you have to already had at least 1 child. i had twins so after they were born i had mine put in.

and no sex does not hurt with it. i can't even tell it's there and aside from the strings occasionally poking dh he can't feel it either.

not really no, now its in i dont notice it at all even when having really rough sex. It made my periods alot more painful for a few months but thats settled and the pain that still happens is easily controllable with paracetamol.

i have a non hormonal IUD, i've had no problems with it so far, i find the pill no good and the patch gives me a rash so i got an IUD.  A non hormonal one may be an option, but beware, having them put in place hurts like nothing i've felt before.

There are many risks when taking any birth control. Especially for women over 35. Definitely talk with your Dr. about any concerns you may have. It would be a good idea if your boyfriend wore a condom as well.

dont do it I got the mirena in nov 2007 bout 6 months later the problems started, uterine fibroid tumors(which can cause sex to hurt) bleeding here and there ( never knowing when it will start or stop), moodswings, loss of libido, vaginal dryness and countless other things.  Go to curezone.com and look at the Mirena forum. I did and I found out I wasn't crazy, it wasn't just in my head. My problems were real and I wasn't the only one. Needless to say I had mine removed in October of 2008 and things are getting better. Take it from someone who has been there, it's not worth it!
