Unprotected Sex

I started to have sex when I was 21. But it was always a fling and the guys were never concerned about protection. I have been lucky that I haven't gotten pregnant but I'm concerned that an STD is lurking. I was tested after my last sexual encounter and it was all negative but they told me that an STD could remain unnoticed for a while.
How long is a while? What should I do? I'm scared that an STD will pop up any moment and make me even more broken, thus incompatible, as a partner.

No, it's your choice. Make sure to always have condoms with you. If a guy will have unprotected sex with you he's most likely trying to get away with doing that with every other girl he's with. This is how people end up with STD's and unplanned pregnancies.
You are responsible for your own sexual health. You can't leave it up to someone else and just hope for the best. There are STD's that are deadly. Why in the world would you take that kind of chance when condoms are so easy to get? They're cheap and if you can't afford them then you can go to any woman's clinic and get them for free. If a guy refuses to use one then tell him no, you care way too much about your health and will not have sex without protection.
Do like the above poster recommended. Get tested every 6 months. Do that even if you use condoms, which I really hope you will start doing.

I feel like it is the choice of guys that has gotten me here so I feel safer if I just don't have sex.

Be responsible and insist on protection. If they say no. Walk away.
After you change your behavior get tested every 6 months when you have your regular Pap smear exam.
