HPV is viral, not bacterial, so it never completely goes away. External signs, like warts, aren't always present, and apparently the dangerous kinds are less likely to cause warts. It does not spontaneously start in women, it's just that we only test women for it. It's like most other STIs that get passed from person to person, never dying off since they find a new reservoir (we can cure chlamydia, but it's still around). You can absolutely catch it from women or men.
I think you're thinking of yeast infections (which are fungal, not bacterial), which can arise spontaneously in women and get passed back and forth to their partners, although men can get yeast infections all by themselves.
Like anonymouse88 said its not a test for men. however you can get it from having unprotected sex with a woman. I got it from my girlfriend before. it makes your penis looks dry and it itches. it goes away if you dont have sex with her until she get treated. i have heard that its a bacterial infection that starts in only women but can affect men who have unprotected sex with woman. its not something they catch or pick up from someone its an infection starts in her that she has no control over. She just have to treat it whenever it comes if it does.
Pap smears can include an HPV test, which is I'm assuming what she had (otherwise, they wouldn't know for sure it was a high risk strain). It's possible to have HPV but not have any external warts, so she could have picked it up somewhere else. You might not have any external symptoms and could have picked it up earlier and given it to her. It could have gone either way without any infidelity on anyone's part.
There isn't an approved HPV test for men, but if you've been having unprotected sex with her, you might want to get one anyway (talk to your doctor and tell them you've been exposed). If you've given her unprotected oral sex, they can do a throat pap on you, although it's not officially recommended. You can both get the HPV vaccine to prevent other high risk strains, although it will not help your girlfriend with the one she already has.
Hi and welcome. The smear was to detect cervical abnormalites. Did they infact detect them or just an opinion. There is no commercial test to see if a person has HPV. Many people infected with this never have symptoms and can be passed unknowingly even if years have passed according to the CDC.
