Fibromyalgia patient with chronic fatigue and sleep problems

41.  Female.  Micropouch Roux En Y Gastric Bypass 10 years ago.  Gall stone and Gall Bladder Removal with accompanying acute pancreatitus 5 years ago.  I was diagnosed with acute fibromyalgia over 4 years with all but one point lighting up like a christmas tree.  I have had sleep studies done and I have severely interrupted sleep.  The feedback I got was that my body falls asleep fairly easily but then as it progresses to deep sleep I believe between stages 2 and 3 my body has a pain reaction and pulls me back out of getting to a deeper sleep.  For the last 4 years I've been through a laundry list of treatments for my fibromyalgia none of which have produced any lasting help.  I've made a switch from big pharm am having been treating my fibromyalgia in a more natural way with vitmains over the last 2+ years because the numbers of scheduled drugs was beginning to thoroughly affect my ability to drive, hold a job or function.  At that point roughly 2 years ago I started taking 2 melatonin pills with theanine every night with bed.  I also am taking twice daily morning and night 5-HTP supplements along with a multi vitamin and Vit D and Iron additionally as most of my vitamin load levels are not good.  Vit D level very low am being watched for bone density, latent iron level of 7-10, daily iron with twice daily pills I can get up to about 28-35, Vit B deficiently expecially B-12 and B-6.

Lately the disturbed sleep is getting worse.  I no longer only fall out of deep sleep I am fully awake one average of 12-18 times a night.  Some changes lately in my life is I am getting more exercise as back in July I switched from commuting by car 25 miles each way a day to commuting by bus and walking 3 miles total a day (in 3/4 mile stints).  I typically rise at 4:15 am as with the fibro it takes me 2.5 hours to wake, get my brain functioning and get ready for work.  In the evening I get home at 5:15, eat dinner, typically try to be in bed about 8:00pm.  My first sleep of the night is usually the best I can get about an hour.  After that I am usually awake every 20-30 minutes.  There seems to be no cause.  One minute asleep one minute laying there wondering why I am awake.  After the first time it gets progressively worse all night.   I've tried various over the counter aids even nyquil will not let me sleep so I can wake up ready to go in the morning.  Instead when I awake all night long on nyquil or nighttime or tylenol pm I feel foggy headed and like I can't think or walk but sleep seems to be out of the question except for a few minutes.

As I stated earlier I have tried a laundry list of things with the fibro, including meditation, accupuncture, massage etc all with limited results.  This is the odd one for me as I can sort out no real cause, my mind is not racing, I'm calm, my legs are randomly flopping around, I'm just awake like I could get up and not go back to sleep but I've tried to do that as well and my muscles and limbs scream at me in pain all day.  I've relegating myself to just laying there trying to give my body the rest my mind and/or body wont let me have with sleep but I would appreciate other suggestions.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

Understand your predicament.
Check to see if your symptoms are due to restless legs syndrome, where there is an odd sensation in the legs during sleep causing the individual to move, which relieves the sensation. This disorder can cause inadequate sleep leading to fatigue and daytime sleepiness. So, I would advise you to consult your primary care physician for further evaluation. He may then ask for a sleep study called polysomnography for further evaluation.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
