Night time waking and not being able to go back to sleep is a form of insomnia. Anything that can cause insomnia can cause this version of it. It's truly called 'night time waking'. Anxiety is a big culprit for this as is depression. THIS is the type of insomnia I have too. It stinks. I have no problem falling asleep but at times, will wake and BAM, I'm up. My mom had this situation as well. I find I have this particularly right before my period so it is likely hormonal for me and anxiety driven at the other times. Things that help are to lay there. Don't get up. Don't turn on lights. Don't turn on the tv. Don't read. And DON'T WORRY. Just daydream and think. Sounds wacky but I can get myself worked up that I'm going to be too tired the next day and then I REALLY can't fall asleep. Make sure during the day you get a lot of exercise. Also, keep the room cool that you sleep in, use white noise like a fan and stop drinking 3 hours before bedtime. Otherwise, we wake up and then can't fall asleep again. good luck
Dunno. But based on your description I'd suggest seeing a doc to either treat or eliminate the possibility of an underlying medical condition.
