Too much watery saliva produced...

For as long as I can remember about once every six months or so I'll have problems sleeping because I produce excess watery saliva.  It'll get to the point where I'll be producing so much that my stomach will start to hurt due to swallowing too much saliva, my throat will hurt, and I can't sleep because I keep having to spit out my saliva every 10 seconds.

It's sort of hard to explain, but it's really annoying because it will happen at random times for apparently no reason at all.  Every time this happens I know I won't be getting any sleep that night.  It's currently 5:50 and I have been up for an hour and thirty minutes spitting out saliva because I can't get back to sleep.  My stomach and throat hurts and I'm currently filling up a water bottle with saliva because I can't bear to swallow it any more.

I'm a healthy, active, 20 year old who doesn't take any medications.  I do not smoke, dip, or partake in any unhealthy habits.

Advice would be amazing.  I'm so tired of having this problem and after scouring the internet and finding nothing on it, I decided to finally post something.

Is there any way to stop saliva production or slow it down during these nights?  Perhaps by eating something?

There are medications that can decrease salivation, particularly in the class of drugs called "anti-cholinergics." You should see your doctor to inquire whether a medication would be appropriate for your case. I hope you get relief soon, H.

Okay so last night this was driving me to the point of insanity. I tried everything: The hot shower on the neck (nope), cereal with milk (no). I took 2 tums to calm the acidity, and I even tried to engage my sympathetic nervous system (aka the one that says STOP MAKING SALIVA YOU'VE GOT TO RUN FROM A DINOSAUR), still didnt' work. I did, however, stick a papertowel in my mouth, but I couldn't breathe through my nose and was sorta choking on it. I did not, however, try Benadryl! I still have to do that for next time, but I definitely recommend taking Benadryl, it sounds like it would work, also make you tired enough to sleep. lastly, stock up on that drug that causes dry mouth for next time, because it WILL happen again!! So in the end, I stuck a paper towel in my mouth, but I recommend using a wash cloth, and it sucked up a lot of moisture and then I just somehow fell asleep. Hope this helps, and that was honestly one of the worst experiences of my life--sorta glad other people are the same.

Had this problem for while too,at times it comes and goes but sometimes it takes longer than usual.. Try brushing at night and any of the above home therapy, but the taking of salt is very dangerous avoid that... if all those don't give you the desired relief, then De-worm yourself, worms av a way of irritating the throat causing so much saliva in d mouth giving you this kind of vomiting sensation, that the way i feel even during the day but worse at night without any activities to put my mind of it.. I do this at times too and it works for me.. hoping you find this information helpful.

It seems many people have this problem. I do too. It is not DURING sleep the saliva produces as some people say, that's like drooling. It's just overproducing while I am awake and I stay up because it fills my mouth and I have to either spit it out or swallow. And it keeps me up for atleast an hour or two and causes alot of gas and bloating. I use to get it very often when I was younger especially when I can't sleep. But all of a sudden I am having it again twice this week and right now. UGH HOW ANNOYING. I wonder if there is some kind of underlying disorder us salivating excess people have? Any ways what I usually do is breath with my mouth and soon I fall asleep and it suddenly turns off the saliva switch. If I pay too much attention it will only get into a worse pattern. Goodluck to all and I hope there is a solution!!
