sleep 15-24 hours at a time

i'm a 26 year old female, and within the past 3 months, i haven't been able to get by with less than 15 hours sleep.  mostly, i sleep around 20-24.  when i wake with any less sleep than that, i feel like i haven't slept at all.  i had a sleep study done, and i never went into REM sleep and woke 98 times in 6 hours.  the found only 1 hypopnea during the test, where my o2 sat dropped to 88%.  i had a follow up with the neurologist, and she told me "it wasn't anything that was going to kill me", and i "needed to force myself to stay awake to get back on a nor mal schedule."... only problem is, i can't stay awake.  i had to drop out of college because i was sleeping between classes, then i'd get home, and get no homework done in the evening, because all i could do was sleep.  the same thing on the weekends.  i don't drink.  i take some medications that cause drowsiness, but i was on them before, and i never slept like this in my life until a few months ago.  please, someone help me.  i can't live like this, and i want to be able to have a normal sleep schedule so i can attend school.  this is not the only condition/symptom i have, my profile has my myriad of "diagnoses" on it.  anyone that can help, thank you.

1st of all, I feel for you. I've been taking medication for pain for almost 20 years and have not had a falling asleep suddenly problem until after I recently had a heart bypass surgery. Since then, I'm taking more medications than I was, tho not for pain. So I'm wondering if maybe they are causing the crazy sleeping problem, or if I'm just over-tired.
My days and nights are getting mixed up cause I fall asleep for about an hour at a time, suddenly. Usually at my desk. I don't usually get to bed until way in the morning hours and I'll sleep about 6 to 8 hours if I can. Though I do rise a few times to go to the bathroom at night, too. I go right back to sleep after I do.
Sometimes, I'll be food shopping and I'll feel myself starting to fall over out of nowhere. Scares me. I grab my cart and shake my head to awaken. Then quickly get out of the store before I fall asleep.
I'll be watching TV with hubby, he'll turn to say something to me, but I've conked out. He'll yell my name to wake me up & I do.
I can't figure out what's doing this to me so often. My skin has also dried up terrible and my hair has half fallen out. I have terribly painful neuropathy for a long time, but it's never affected me this way before. The only new medicines I'm taking are for blood pressure. Could it be from them ? Oh...and I'm also on blood thinners. Them maybe ?
People said I looked great after my surgery, but I don't feel like myself at all. It's creepy for sure.
After my surgery, my thyroid was a little fast. It has since settled down though. It normally was at a slow pace/borderline too slow. I also lost 20 pounds after surgery which is fine with me. It's also settled down. I assume that happened because they were keeping me on several diets while in the hospitals. But I'm eating normally now. Any ideas ???

Narcolepsy would be the obvious guess, but there are other causes. Examples could be iron deficiency anemia, B 12 deficiency, hypothyroidism, diabetes, etc.  depending on how much pain medication and the morphine equivalent see you are on it, I would consider possibly the medication.

Now that I think about it, if you are getting 6 to 8 hours, it is more likely a delayed sleep phase issue. A artificial light can be helpful first thing  in the morning, then taper back 30 minutes. Another trick to add is that once you find out how long your ideal sleep time is,  that is literally the only time you are to be in your room or to sleep.

You can probably find it under sleep hygiene. Trust me, this is my problem too

There's your answer. You made the smallest issue out of your prescribed medication, but it's your potential addiction to Xanax and Hydrocodone that makes you sleepy.

I would say you are on too many medications is why you are so sleepy.  As a matter of fact, I found this message board because I googled "muscle relaxant made me sleep for 24 hours".  They don't always make me sleep that long, but quite often they do.  I too have fibromyalgia, but I have to take meds sparingly because they make everything worse if taken too much.  There's not an answer of what causes fibromyalgia, so for all we know, some of these things we take are making it worse.  There is a new study saying they think it's some sort of long term infection, which is why exercise and any exertion makes you feel worse.  You wouldn't exercise if you had bronchitis, etc., so that's why you feel so bad exercising with fibro.  I saw this on Dr. Oz.  It's now called "Systemic Exertion Intolerance".  Not everyone knows the new name.  They were talking about chronic fatigue syndrome, but it's the same as fibro.

But back to your meds, you shouldn't need Xanax and Depakote if you're on Cymbalta, unless the Depakote is for seizures.  But not the Xanax.  That makes me sleepy too.  You also shouldn't be taking hydrocodone for long term.  Try anti inflamatories instead.  They won't make you sleepy and target a real problem; inflamation, instead of masking it like pain pills do.  Your Skelaxin is the muscle relaxant.  Don't take that too much.  Most doctors won't tell you you are on too many meds because it's in THEIR best interest, not yours, for you to be on them.  They get kick backs from the drug companies (drug dealers).

But as sure as I am the sky looks blue, you are sleepy beause you are on too many meds that have a sleepiness side effect!!  Read the info. that comes with those meds.  If you need Xanax, then the Cymbalta is the wrong med for you.  Try another one, like Zoloft, or better yet, there is group therapy for people with panic disorder.  I've gone to them and they really help. I have also bought books and CD's from the author "Lucinda Bassett" called "Attacking Anxiety & Depression".  I got them years ago and still refer to them once in awhile.  Works better than any medication!  As far as pain goes, that's a hard one until they know FOR SURE what fibro is and has a cure or maintainance plan for it.  Exercise does make it worse because you already are so sore, but stretching a LOT makes it better.  Start out lightly though.  Pain meds like hydrocodone just masks pain.  Muscle relaxants can help short term, but just take a light dose once in while, not everyday.  I cut mine in half.  If your dose is really high, then half might still be too much.  Get a lower dose.  I WISH YOU WELL on finding out what's wrong.  I have also been suffering for years with pain and fatigue, but trust me when I say taking that many meds and still having problems is the wrong answer!

Hey i am a cabbie. i dont have a set schedule for work and i have had the similar problem,not for months and months but once in a week/ 2 weeks.when i am up i am up for a whole 24 hrs day and when i am sleep,i am asleep for 15-24 hours.
i am 42 yrs old, diabetic for last 5 years.i  started worrying that this cud be a symptom to something bigger or worst but the way you explained dealing  the problem gives me lot of courage to understand my sleeping/staying up problem.
i will try to dicipline myself right away and kick my problem outta my life.Thank you somuch.
