That's not true ..they don't test for nicotine ..there testing for an ingredient in the nicotine which is called continine..the reason they test is because nicotine causes issues with healing and in addition ..can sometimes ruin the entirety of the surgery ...if your still smoking .....

I too am having a spinal fusion done and the reason that they won't do the surgery if you haven't stopped smoking is bcuz smoking inhibits healing. In order for the fusion to be effective and for the bone to grow like it should, you have to quit smoking. My surgeon is testing me and he told me that if I tested positive for nicotine, he won't do the surgery. I'm ok with that bcuz I know that my doctor isn't lying about the bad effects of nicotine. If rather give up cigarettes than live in severe pain every day of my life!! Today was my 5th day not having smoked at all.
It seems to me that testing for nicotine is a 4th amendment violation. Wouldn't they then have to test blood for fat content in an obese person? I am about to have back surgery and my insurance company wants me tested for nicotine. Why? what does nicotine have to do with needing two vertebrae fused. Nicotine did not cause this issue, life did. I feel violated on every level. I us a vapor pipe so I will test positive for nicotine. Nicotine by itself is not bad for you. So will my surgery be denied? Even though I no longer smoke? It is an unreasonable search of my person. Ie: 4th amendment.
Cancer risk increases over time due to the deposition of radioactive polonium in the lungs. This polonium originates from fertilizers used by Tobacco producers. Here's the information from the CDC if as a reader you don't believe me.

Cancer has sky rocketed because the effects of cigarettes happen later in life. People suffering from cancer related to smoking because they started smoking decades ago.
The nicotine test is done on urine, not blood for insurance underwriting. If they test for cotanine, that substance stays in your system much longer.
the safe zone would be 72 hour after take last tobacco. and withdrawal effect will occur this period. I suggested you read this for short version: http://prescriptionfact.com/how-long-does-nicotine-stay-in-your-system/
Hi Nick,
I use a Vapor Pipe that has 12% nicotine (this is an improvement from 1 pack every days.
I have an exam to pass.....does the nicotine really leave your blood stream in 3 days?
As a licenced life insurance agent, I can tell you that what is being tested for is NOT just cigarettes. The list for a tobacco rating includes e-cigs, cigars, marijuana, pipes, dip, chew, hookah, smoking cessation products (i.e. gums, patches, etc...) as well as cigarettes. The contestibility period is for two years after that, the policy is incontestible for a death arising out of tobacco use. Keep in mind that there are other circumstances where a life policy does not pay, such as during the commission of a crime.
I would be willing to bet you drink nearly a half gallon of coffee and diet coke in a day huh or perhaps chocolate? That is ok right? Or perhaps you like to drink a few glasses of wine every night? Don't judge people who smoke or say we don't deserve to have surgeries elective or otherwise. I don't drink booze or beer or alcohol or drink caffeine in beverages or pills at all. It's a stimulant and has poor affects on the body as well. Caffeine can cause irregular heartbeat in sensitive people, There is concern that caffeine might aggravate bleeding disorders. To much caffeine can affect bi-polar and anxiety disorders. Some research suggests that caffeine may affect the way the body uses sugar and might worsen diabetes. SO how is that any better? I don't care who you are, everyone has a crutch and they should treat everyone the same. I'd sign a waiver not holding the hospital liable or the Dr and say that any negative affects caused by nicotine after the surgery would not be covered. I pay for my insurance just the same as you or many others. Why and how is one "drug" better than another?
I completely agree. That is why I am here reading this forum. I am having bariatric surgery in a few months. They said that I have to quit smoking before the surgery. They said that if I show up and my urine test pos for nicotine the day of my surgery they will cancel my surgery and have done it to others My concern too is that I live with a heavy smoker. Also can't use the patch or inhalers to help stop either. I feel so screwed. So if I quit wouldn't second hand smoke be in my system? However they say you cannot have caffeine either. SO are the people jacked up on coffee and soda getting **** tested?? NOPE! Caffeine is a drug and a stimulant in my opinion one is no better or worse than the other. It's BS and not fair and it pisses me off. To much caffeine is bad for your heart. So what is the diff? They said nicotine can cause ulcers in the stomach after the surgery. It's ironic. The insurance does not want me to have the surgery because of nicotine but being morbidly obese is better? Whatever...can you tell I'm annoyed? I think being overweight can have way more negative affects as opposed to smoking.

Nicotine Blood Test
Test of nicotine levels has illustrates that it takes 1-3 days to eliminate the nicotine from the blood. Unlike testing for nicotine, that for cotinine reveals the cotinine will be detected during 1-10 days after disappearance of tobacco..
the best thing you can do is stop smoking, do mediation to help your body to exhaust the nicotine you have in your body. moreover, Do some physical exercise and drink more water to boost your metabolism

I am supposed to be having surgery the second week in July....... I was in a very bad accident before Christmas and was released from the trauma center with an undiagnosed injury...... They now say I need surgery, I am a smoker...... The doctor told me that he would not, and I mean absolutely would not do surgery if I continued to smoke...... so, I have been smoke free for a little over 4 weeks now, kind of, I am worried, I quit cold turkey, but there have been 2 days in the last 4 weeks that I smoked a few cigarettes through out the day, but only those 2 days and the next day I feel bad about it and don't smoke again for another 2 weeks or so, then it seems like I need a couple cigarettes and I am good again. I have pre op the week before my surgery, with me only being so far out as a non smoker, do you think the nicotine will show up, or would it be fair to say that the doctor would be expecting to see some nicotine still in my system since I just recently quit? what kind of test do they do for nicotine and surgery? Thanks
Have you ever considered the fact that enviormental factors such as urea formaldehyde, black dust from ones pellet stove, dust from pre treated lumber, molds, car exhaust, Chinese manufacted electronics, chlorine, ammonia, pesticide, and herbicides...are far more intrusive to ones immune system. My only vice is a few organic cigerttes a day, nothing compared to these very toxic substances I been subjected to and sensitive to since a wee child. I understand your view but please consider how narrow minded it is, Good luck with opening your mind to a higher place beyond the propaganda your medical system requires. A lot of people are really f...up because of these discrimanitory policies :(
my ex father in law got life insurance shortly before he died. it was only $10,000, but they said he was a non smoker. which at the time was true, but he had only quit a month before getting the policy and died 3 months later. they refused to pay and the cause of death was kidney cancer. pretty crappy if you ask me. as much money as they make, it would not have hurt to pay that out. whatever test they did showed it in him 4 months later
Insurance companies should refuse elective surgeries because of smoking. It alters your microvasculature, healing times, mucous production, cilia, lung physiology, etc. All of those things result in longer hospital stays, possible OR times, recovery periods, PT, etc. If I'm the one covering you and you can't quit smoking for a few weeks, then enjoy sitting at home with whatever condition you have because I'm not dropping a considerable amount of money on costs that could easily be avoided.
This is all fine and good for life insurance. The real problem lies with healthcare and health insurance. Insurance companies refusing to approve surgeries cause you smoke. I call BS. on their reasoning, they want you to quit smoking for six weeks and take a test.
Good point. Over the decades , smoking reduced from 60% to 20%, but cancer sky racketed during these years. But no body questions sanity of the anti smoking propaganda, because smoking propagandists so much money doctors, advertisers, bankers every body is in their grip.
I used to smoke 1-2 cigs a day. I quit smoking a few years ago, as soon as the e-cigs came out. I believe they have some nicotine in them and I'm concerned that my insurance renewal will be denied due to the e-cig. I'm not looking to lie, but nicotine is not what causes cancer in smokers. Also, what about those folks who use nicotine gum, patches, etc? They're not smoking, but enjoy the effects of the nicotine. If nicotine is like any other stimulant, why wouldn't caffeine be an issue for the insurance companies? Why wouldn't prescription stimulants be an issue, as well? There has to be a better way to test for smoking.
not likely, and they will deny u cuz they did me, because i said three months ago, ,or give u a higher rate,,,,,,so i am now over the yr mark and going to apply now ill let you all know if i pass , i only take a few drags off my boyfriends ,,, so a few puffs a day ,,, well see .
yes it can and acidic drinks...also antioxidant foods... it flushes the liver and kidneys..also exercise through sweating speeds metabolism in the body..it also said to eat garlic, onions, and egg yolks..well i didnt like that cause then i felt like a heart attack with bad breath....
