It's certainly the best thing I have ever done for myself. Not to mention the financial benefit of quitting :)
My sister really found chantix helpful. They basically close off the receptors that get the nicotine high. So you find every cigarette less and less satisfying. However, it can have some side effects and can interact with other medications so I would talk to a doctor before getting them. Also you can't take them while pregnant.
Personally I just quit cold turkey because I found the gum unhelpful, I can't use the patches, and I hate pills. It took a few times and honestly I'm still struggling somedays (it's been 5 months). However, whenever the stress piles up and the desire to smoke comes around I remember that my grandma is terminal. If that idea seems too much to comprehend; the idea of my own mortality being too surreal, I look at this site: http://www.globalone.tv/profiles/blogs/what-happens-to-your-body-if It breaks down what happens after you stop smoking, starting with 20 minutes afterwards. It's hard, but just keep at it and you'll get there.
Congratulations for wanting to quit you have certainly good reasons to do so indeed. I used lobelia tincture and used that for the first 3 days to help get through the physical addiction. I haven't smoked since November 15th, 1998. Keep us posted on what works :)
