It takes 72 hours to rid the body of nicotine if you go cold turkey and no cheating. With that said, it takes a little more time for the lungs and body to start repairing themselves, so better safe than sorry and quit asap. The thing that determines your success in this is determining who is in control of your body, you or the nicotine. Good luck.

back in 2002 when I needed surgery my doctor said a minimum of 3 months nicotine free, a family member whos an anesthesiologist confirmed this, they both of course said the longer the better.....gives lungs time to clear themselves somewhat and b/p to normalize too...
good luck♥

I may be mistaken, but I think 3 days of no tobacco rids the system of nicotine.  I recently quit and have about 18 days under my belt, so quitting is doable.  Good luck on quitting and better luck with the surgery.
