ugh...

Need to find a way to gain some inner strength to do the cold turkey thing.

Anyone know of any good books or anything? How do those of you that have quit cold turkey do it?

My mom told me to just keep telling myself that I'm a "bleep" ( insert any nasty word there ) and that would help.
She says that's what she did and it worked...glad it worked for her, but I already have low enough self-esteem, thank you very much, mom...ugh.

I've been reading "The easy way to quit"...have read it several times...but it's not working for me.

The wonderful lady who lives next door gave me her copy because she got halfway through it and quit...and stayed quit. You can blow smoke in her face ( which her hubby does ) and it doesn't even affect her. Must be nice.

I'm a weak, spineless, jellyfish. More often than not lately, I feel that I am ready to quit...but then some stressful thing will happen ( like my dad and niece passing away one after the other, and then hubby almost dropping dead, and then a miscarriage...all within 5 months time) which made me smoke even harder.
I saw a psychiatrist recently and told her what's been going on and that I have to quit ASAP. She told me that we'll work on my anxiety first, ADD next, and then the smoking issue somewhere down the road... UGH! My smoking is CAUSING the anxiety!
I know that I have to quit or hubby won't...and this time he WILL die the doctor said...so what do I do?
I NEED WILLPOWER!!!
Where do you find it? And yes...I already know...in the dictionary...heard that one a hundred times. lol

I downloaded 8 different quit smoking self hypnosis tracks...listened to them ALL day and night...it helped me to fall asleep at night anyway.
When hubby quit the last time, he thought that I had quit with him by going cold turkey...I was smoking behind his back...a drag here and there so that he wouldn't catch me. I thought of how stupid that was because a non-smoker can smell a smoker a mile away...yet he had no clue. I told him of this a few days ago and he says that he didn't know. Maybe his sense of smell left...of course, I was smoking outside in the wind and rain, taking constant showers, changing my clothes every 5 minutes ( said the toddler had spilled something or touched me with dirty hands ) all sorts of things.
I don't want to be a closet smoker. It did make me cut down...was only smoking about 5 a day instead of a pack or so a day. Some days, when hubby was working at home, I would only get in about 5 puffs a day.
Kinda funny, cause I really didn't mind. But it made that one puff sooooooo good.
If I know I have smokes in the house I feel kinda safe...if there are none I panic full out. If they're in the house I'll smoke them. If there are none I'll go and buy them.
Should I cut off my hands?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Negative Nancy.

I was a closet smoker and quit cold turkey before spending a weekend with my family at a reunion. Being at my cousins bed n breakfast with my family EVERYWHERE made it impossible for me to sneak away to start smoking again. It would've worked even if I wasn't a closet smoker cuz I would have them be my cheerleaders/babysitters and remind/support me in quitting.

Quitting is relatively simple. You simply quit smoking, period. Then you hang on for dear life and one day you will emerge feeling semi human again. Will power is the key and wanting to do it is the key to willpower. That and looking at pictures and listening to stories of personal experiences of people just like you who tried but won too late in the game. Go visit a ward in the hospital full of copd patients. I gaurantee that this will motivate you to quit.

Hello again.  First of all, we have to work on your attitude.  Being so negative isn't going to do you any good at all.  Quitting smoking is very hard and a positive attitude is imperative.  Without it, you will likely fail.  I suggested on your post of May27th to look up whyquit.com?  Did you? If not, do it.  It's been a lifesaver for many of us.  It also supports a cold turkey quit (which is how I did it) if you want to join, but if you don't, you can still read all the articles.

The way you do it is just stop.  It's hard, very hard, but you won't be miserable forever although it may feel like it.  I told you before I'd quit several times beginning in Jul07.  You can expect an increase in anxiety for about 40 - 60days.  If you feel you simply can't tolerate that though, then see your dr and ask to go on an anti-depressant for a few months.  That's helped several members.  I just waited it all out and here I am, a year and 3mos quit and So happy and feel So much better!  Simply put, there is no *easy* way to stop smoking.  What makes it tolerable is having a positive attitude and nerves of steal.  Upload a tracker to keep yourself accountable and just take it one day at a time.  Sometimes, it's one minute at a time - everyone who has quit, has struggled.  But if we can do it, so can you!  Really.  Keep posting and best of luck!
