There are always exceptions to every rule and whyquit is biased to CT, and it works for those who can quit without an aid but it helps us who need help, even if we choose not to go that route and that's why I always tell people to read the articles there. None of the articles , at least not that I can remember say anything about cold turkey quits (Joel's Library) but talk more about the addiction and what we need to know, what to expect and how to fight the urges and that is so important to someone who is struggling through those first weeks, months.
You are right about CT with metal illness, thanks for pointing that out!
Congratulations on your quit!
It's probably a decent site to use if you decide to go CT. However, there are legitimate reasons not to go CT. If you have mental illness, your chances of quitting CT are horrible. Withdrawals tend to exacerbate the symptoms of schizophrenia and cause mania in those who are bipolar. The withdrawals with NRT are more subtle and manageable. Also, some of the stats at whyquit.com are absolutely misleading. CT has the worst rate of long term success. So why suffer and more than you have to? NRT just about doubles your chances, although only 7% of those who use NRT are still quit one year later. That means your chances with CT are about 3-4%. It is true that more people (worldwide) quit CT than any other way. I wasn't able to quit until I used NRT. It's been close to a year.
whyquit.com is the site that helped me quit CT
I have known people who have successfully quit using the patch and I also know people who quit successfully cold. I have done both programs. I find it easier for me to face it, do it and get it done and then deal with the emotions. With that said, I found the patches very effective for providing nicotine to my system while I worked on the physical habit part. To each their own. As long as you do it, who cares how you get it done.
thanks kathyjo for explaing that
of course we would have all loved to quit CT and for those who do, they might have a higher incidence of success, but there are many who have succeeded with help and I am one of them.
Understand that whyquit is an excellent site for learning about your addiction and though they support CT, it doesn't mean you have to quit CT. Learn from their site and take from it the tools you will need to have a successful quit.
