wieght gain if i quit?

So im a little anxious to quit smoking (isnt everyone?). I probably smoke just under a pack a day. its been two years since i started.
This sounds so ridiculous but im concerned about gaining weight once I quit .I know a few extra pounds is nothing compaired to what will happen if i keep smoking. But , alas, this is one BIG thing making me not want to quit. Anything I can do lower the possibilities of this happening? How much weight does one normaly gain? I assume i can start dieting big time ( but in a healthy way) as soon as i quit, but im worried that missing my cigs and my normal food will be to overwhelming and i will delve into both allll over again.
advice and info would be great!

I put on 15 lbs. and at 54 it isn't easy to take it off. I continue to go to the gym 4 days a week and I eat very healthy, but I too have a thyroid issue and I think the combination works against me. The alternative, smoking, is not an option : )
Congrats to you on your quit!

HI.. Well i smoke now but just in the last couple of months, but... when i did quit, i found that walking or running was the best way to quit plus keep the weight down. when i quit, i did for 7 months and why i started again, i have no idea, i dint even desire one but its was my bday and well you know.. lol anywase, i can do it and so can you, and keeping your self busy is a plus, and you ll find that you ll be tired at first for a while but that and your craven to smoke will only last a month or so if that. i mean the few months you quit, there will be cravens but will be very little and easy to control but the walking alwase helped me with that problem and the frist day or two is hard but get threw that and keep your mind set and you ll do fine! i even lost like 80 lbs when i quit and figuered if i was quiting mise well keep being healthy so i ate good foods and still do and you ll love how good ever thing smells. lol good luck=)

I have found that it has to do with the habits you trade the smokes for. Use raw vegetables instead of candy and take a brisk walk when getting a craving. Use fruit juice when first quitting instead of caffeine.

You will gain weight. How much depends on you. Your body will change. My Doc is so happy she called me a little while ago just to see if I was still not smoking.
I walk, some weight lifting, try to watch what I eat. I did not use food when I quit smoking but I was never one that needed to workout very much. It has been alnost 4 months now and I have put on 10 lbs. I really hope that is it. Doc says it is soooo much better then smoking. I will get it off. Being 50 dosen't help either lol! So I am on my way out the door as we speak! Congrads on wanting to quit.

There is a medical explanation for the weight......something to do with how nicotine speeds up your metabolism so when you quit it has to adjust.
You had better prepare yourself for some extra pounds, just how much is entirely up to you. Me, personally, about 25 lbs. Considering that I used smoking as a food suppressor, well I knew what I was in for.
Join a gym or YMCA, do some walking or anything that will keep you moving. It will help you control both your weight and urges.

Carrot & celery sticks, toothpicks, plenty of water and your should be okay. Good luck!
