Thousand of Births to Over-40s!

I knew I had seen this statistical table somewhere, so I looked it up.

Link: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/84f0210x/2007000/t003-eng.htm

Here in Canada in 2007, there were 367,864 live births in total.
Of these, 10,854 were to women 40 and over at the time of the birth.

10,854!!!!!

Moreover, the footnote for the final column "Age not Stated," tells us that this column includes births to women over 50, as well as some infants whose birth-mothers' info was unknown. I wonder how many were to over-50 mothers?

So, just think of it! 10,854 live births to mothers 40 and over in Canada, in 2007 alone! Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. Whip out a copy of this table!

This encouraging number is only amplified when you consider that women over 40 who conceive are the age group most likely these days to terminate the pregnancy because it was unintended. If this was not so, then the number of live births might easily be 20,000!

Go, team!

Me again...

I started wondering how many of those births were to the 45-and-over set, since I'll belong in that group in two months.

No actual number is available, but I found a table of EXPECTED rates for 2007, which closely matches the actual rates in the table in my last post.  Here's the table:
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/84f0210x/2007000/t035-eng.htm

What it tells us is that in Canada in 2007, 429 women age 45 and up were statistically expected to produce a live birth. So much for those who say it's "impossible"!

And again, keep in mind how much larger that number would be if most women of that age were TRYING to conceive, which most of them are not (the majority are likely on birth control, or terminate any pregnancy that occurs).

Wow - 429 women over in Canada per year producing a live birth. That means it's likely that about 4,290 women in the USA do this every year - since the USA's population is approximately 10x Canada's.

So, there you go! Keep up the good work!
