I'm this very moment sitting in a waiting room waiting (and waiting and waiting) to have a baseline mammogram done, required by my RE before I can start meds for IVF in a few days (whenever CD2 comes around).

I'm a little grumpy and tired from too much work travel (after the mammogram I zip off to another out-of-state presentation), but I'm making an effort to stay focussed, positive, and cheerful :D <-- absolutely genuine smile, really...

Hello, (posted in wrong place before, sorry!)
I don't think I'm on the list but I've been reading. I'm 40 and been TTC for about 5 mo., since my wedding to my wonderful new DH.I have an 8 yr old DD from my previous marriage but my DH has none. I thought this might be the month as I felt alot of cramping this month but also had a lot of spotting. I got the dreaded visit from AF last night however and am a little bummed, she came 3 days early. We are supposed to try until March, then the doc wants to see us for more tests. Hopefully it will happen before then but things aren't looking good.
Good luck to all those who are now pg and to those still trying. Lots of SSBD!

Hi MJ, welcome! Sorry that AF came, but maybe you'll be able to close the door on her next month, so that she knows she isn't welcome. ;o)

Hello E/O

Just and update from me:   I am in my TWW, AF is due to show her ugly face on the 29th.   Still again, no signs that she is on her way.   Congrats to Sue68 and Mybabypooh, still giving us hope.

If AF shows, I will be increasing the soy to 195mg for 5 days, and putting DH on fertilityblend.   Keep your fingers crossed.

Wishing all a Happy Thanksgiving, and lot and lots of Baby dust.

Hi Savvy;)
Ok so, I am now 10DPO.  I  wasn't planning on POAS early, but I just realized  tonight that I need to, cuz I'm on Crinone once @ night, & if I'm not, then I have to get off it!

This month, it was natural;) The BAD news is that since I had SUCH A BAD HEAD COLD/SINUS INFECTION (YUCK!) we only BS ONCE;( during my "fertile time"  BUT it was the night that I had my surge;) So timing was PUUURFECT;)  The GREAT news was my CM was SOOOO MUCH, since I was so SICKO, I was taking TONS & TONS of gumi Vit. C's ;D  So that made me have lots of extra CM, & since I knew I was about to O, I sucked it up, & didn't take any meds! (it would dry me up)
HOPEFULLY my small suffering will have paid off LOL
TTFN;)

The month I need it (I start IVF meds on cd2), AF is stubbornly NOT showing up. If this is a sign of stress, I'm not sure that bodes well for a successful IVF month.

Just waiting for AF is pretty stressful, I'm imagining in paranoia that last month's big follicle was my last one ever, a holiday is coming up to add extra stress and relatives to the mental mix, yadda yadda blah blah...

It looks like my post didn't go through earlier--and of course it was the cleverest clever thing I've ever written--so, in a sentence: waiting for AF so I can start IVF meds on cd2 and my otherwise clockwork AF decides this it the month it's going to be LATE. Grrrr...

I'm still here. 43 and TTC au naturale. I'm on CD6 and just realized that I forgot to do my CBEFM this morning. Doh! I also think it's possible that I may've had a second chemical pregnancy last month. My cycle lasted 32 days and the bleeding was really, really heavy the first couple of days with lots of cramping--just like last month (when I did have a chemical pregnancy).

I saw a new RE yesterday and I liked him VERY MUCH. Fellow NYers, if you're looking for someone who sits down and talks to you and LISTENS to you, I believe I found the guy. The bad news is he thinks my left tube may be blocked, even though I had an HSG last year and it was clear. So now I have to go in Monday for a hydrosonogram to check just that tube. I asked him how we'll unblock if it if is, in fact, blocked. He said, "We won't. We'll go to low-stim, natural IVF." Now, this IS something I've looked into previously since I have elevated FSH levels and don't really respond to the fertility drugs, but I had kinda decided to just try on my own. The reason I went to this doctor at all is b/c my acupuncturist said that every woman TTC should have her thyroid checked out, as well as her Vit B12 and D-3 levels. I thought I'd also request a hormone panel to find out if I'm a candidate for DHEA. So the blocked left tube came as a big surprise. I hope he's wrong and that it's clear. I would maybe try ONE cycle of low-stim IVF in a few months (after I've been taking my supplements and doing acupuncture long enough to make an impact), but--for me--I really think I prefer au naturale.

As for the hormone panel, he is the third doctor to tell me that I don't need it, but he did agree to look at my DHEA levels in my bloodwork. I would really like to find someone who will do a saliva hormone panel, but I think I may need to go to a regular endocrinologist for that, as opposed to an RE. Anyway, he wrote me an Rx for the DHEA. If I fill it (which I'm leaning toward), I'll be taking 25mg 3x/day. Since some others here are interested in DHEA, I really think we should start a separate thread that can be chock full of all the DHEA info we find.

Finally, I have appointment #2 today with the wonderful acupuncturist I found. I want to reiterate that it is not simply about reducing one's stress levels but about actually bringing more blood flow to the uterus, which can help your eggs, the endometrium, etc., and also about balancing your hormone levels. I've read way too many good things about it to not put it in my arsenal. Again, fellow NYers, if you're looking, I've found someone who's really thorough (looks at your medical records, has a working relationship wtih an RE, etc.). I had to keep a food journal this past week and pay close attention to my energy levels, my physical being, etc. I've learned that my toes are almost always cold!! And cold feet can pull blood flow from the uterus, so I'm now beginning to soak my feet in a hot tub as needed to get the blood moving.

All right, I tend to write too much here, so I'll just say GOOD LUCK TO US ALL!!

Thanks for responding to my donor eggs statement in the last roll call. I do think a lot of REs believe the goal is to carry a child by any means necessary (and perhaps for some women it is), as opposed to the goal being to have your own biological child. I had a very negative phone conversation with an RE at RMA a couple of weeks ago, and he was insistent that I go to donor eggs if I want to continue "working with" their clinic (I was calling to see if I could get a hormone panel for DHEA, and he told me I was "grasping at straws." What an ***.)

Anyway, in case it was misunderstood by anyone, I want to clarify that I'm in NO WAY opposed to women using donor eggs. I just have a beef with the REs putting it in the exact same category as using your own eggs. Without so much as a shrug, they tell you to go to donor eggs, as though it's nothing to give up on your own eggs. I spoke to a woman over the summer who was moving onto donor eggs. I asked her why not adoption? She said she really wants to carry the child she'll raise--that she believes it will create a special bond. Also, it would be her DH's biological child. So it makes sense in a lot of ways. But the point is, it is a PERSONAL decision and the REs need to RESPECT that. I have a right to try to have my own biological child, use donor eggs, adopt, go childless or get a dog, but it is MY choice and I find it truly offensive when these REs IGNORE what I've told them and insist that I go to donor eggs. How dare they? Really. How dare they???

Okay, I'm getting myself worked up again. Big deep breath. Again, I've found an RE who seems to listen, if any NYers are interested.

Wishing you all a beautiful day! :)

Hiho!

It IS a beautiful day, even here in the boreal north woods where it's raining right now (far cry from NYC!)

Breezy, I'm really glad you like your new doc.  I've been waiting to hear how it turned out. Don't fuss too much about possibly having a blocked tube - it doesn't automatically cut your chances in half. The body is a mysterious thing...

Yes! Anyone with info in DHEA, or questions, should tell/ask.  A separate thread might be a good idea. Interesting, Breezy, that your doc prescibed DHEA without the hormone panel first. I think it's safe to assume that once your in your 40s a little boost is probably good (although anyone in doubt should ask their doc).

As for me, still au natural, TTC right now but I suspect AF will come on Thursday or Friday, all the usual symptoms, although I've had especially sore BBs this time (which the cat likes to stamp on when I'm lying in bed).

Oh, and Alice, that was NOT your last big follicle!  :-)

Best wishes,
~Wendy

Hi Everyone.

Today I had appt #2 with the acupuncturist. I thought it was going to be only 45 minutes, but it was actually nearly 2 hours long! She asked me a series of questions based on the extensive paperwork I filled out last week, and then she said that she suspects I have a thyroid condition. It's not something that's ever even occurred to me.

Well, later on today I got a call from my new RE's office. They had drawn a bunch of blood yesterday and had gotten some of the results back. Well, it turns out that I have a subclinical hypothyroidism! I cannot believe it. In the past year and a half, no other clinic ever screened my thyroid, and I read tonight that the likelihood of m/c goes WAY, WAY up with hypothyroidism. When I m/c'd last month, my RE simply racked it up to age. He didn't run a single test on me, and now I find out that I have this condition that might be the reason I m/c'd. If it had been treated with the appropriate meds, I might not have m/c'd. I hate to think this way, but it's impossible to not "go there."

I'm wondering how many of you ladies have had your thyroid screened? Unfortunately, we can't rely on the REs to do everything for us. We each need to take a proactive approach in our own treatment. Sharing information on forums like this one is invaluable for that reason.

Anyway, I have a follow-up appt on Monday and will be given an Rx for meds. I do have several symptoms of hypothyroidism that I was attributing to age and stress, such as head fog, sleep issues, being cold while others are warm (especially my feet) and weight gain that's been hard to take off even when I was running a lot over the summer. I'm also now unsure about taking DHEA with the thyroid meds. I will talk to the RE on Monday and see if he thinks that taking them together is okay.

Okay, must get to bed. Hope everyone is doing swell!

:)

I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

CD21 and still no real symptoms of AF.   My hips ache, but that may be from the spill I took 2 days ago.   The ice jumped up and grabbed me.

I wish I could see an RE, there are none where I live, I would have to travel 3 hours to Boise, and with the roads being so icey, DH says we will in the spring if we need to, but keep it au naturale.   Next thing you know, I will be a POAS addict.

SSBD to us all

We should all think forward to what we can take charge of, not backward to what cannot be changed, right? Easier said than done, of course, but now you have a handle on something specific, and I'm hoping this is the last piece of the puzzle for a healthy pregnancy.

I've been told my thyroid is within normal range, but I should check and make sure I have that information right. My extremities are always cold, but that's been a lifelong thing. I can't remember whether I read it here or elsewhere that women ttc should soak their cold toesies in warm water to help free that blood circulation to other vital areas. And since I have a gigantic supply of Lush products that I'll soon have to stop soaking the rest of myself in (to avoid getting all those herbs, spices, and assorted chemicals in unmentionable places--just in case), a toasty foot bath will be a good excuse to keep using the bath bombs and bubble bars.

That acupuncturist sounds thorough! I really do have to arrange to see one soon (or her in specific). I am CD31 waiting for AF and losing the remaining shreds of my mind. And second-guessing my donor. Any threads around here about donor anxiety/panic/freakout??

Finally, cd31 is now officially cd1 (and, hooboy, we sure do know all the details of one another's lives, don't we!). I must get to the RE's office at 7:30 am tomorrow for a day-2 u/s and to pick up the IVF meds. I really don't mind doing the injections, just the side effects, and that final unnerving intramuscular injection. At least it's only 2-1/2 weeks of meds this time. Let the wild rumpus begin...

Alice,

According to my RE, my thyroid is within normal limits by most standards but NOT for getting pregnant and not for carrying to term. One of the numbers (I don't have all the info in front of me) needs to be below 2 and mine wasn't. Go see Dr. Melnick at advanced fertility services:

(Located on the UES.) He's a super nice guy and really sits down and talks to you. I also REALLY LIKED his assistance Galeena. I've only had one appt there so far (#2 on Monday), but I felt more listened to than I did at Columbia or RMA. Anyway, one of his "things" is the thyroid. Also, I told him that I've not been screened for ureaplasma or mycoplasma. He told me that they usually give a prophylactic antibiotic to women undergoing IVF  to guard against any bacterial infections (I'm sure Columbia does this as well) and he said that he would prescribe one for me too, even though I'm not doing IVF. When I told him that I don't believe in taking prophylactic antibiotics, he nodded and said that in that case he'd actually SCREEN me for the ureaplasma and mycoplasma. So I'm awaiting those results as well. He also checked my B12 and D3 counts (still waiting for those results too) and whether or not I'm anemic (though I asked for this one). I also told him that nobody has checked my progesterone levels following ovulation. He didn't seem to think it's necessary, but said that if I wanted it done, he'd be HAPPY to. So all of that was a nice change of pace for me.

As for acupuncture--she's expensive, but seems really worth it--go to Elizabeth Carpenter at Orien's Healing Sanctuary (at 40th and Madison). She's extremely thorough, which is wonderful. She's affiliated with Randine Lewis, author of The Infertility Cure (a book I highly recommend). It took me FOUR acupuncturists to find her, which is ironic b/c she's a half block from where I work and she's the only one I saw who's connected to Randine Lewis.

Anyway, I'll try to keep you updated about my thyroid. I was just reading online tonight that an iodine deficiency could be the culprit. I eat very little salt, no fish, etc. And when I do eat salt, it tends to be sea salt, so now I'm wondering if I should just add more salt to my diet? I don't know. Like you, my extremities have always been cold. I think the two stand-out symptoms for me are that I've been kinda air-heady lately and I recently put on about 15 lbs that I can't seem to lose.

Glad to hear AF has finally made an appearance and hope you have a great appt tomorrow morning! Here's to lots of little eggie-poos!

OK - AF just showed up.  Better luck next month!

Interesting discussion about thyroid. I know my TSH, at last reading, was 2.75. I also know that folks taking thyroid medication for hypothyroidism aim to keep their TSH at less than 2.

Most docs don't do further testing on you unless your level is above 5.

Perhaps I should get mine checked again. The last test was over 2 years ago.
