Any advice?

I am 14 and have been getting depressed over the past year or so. I read things in the news, or even when a pet passes away I don't know how to handle it. I get extremely upset, and just cry and scream until I feel like I can't anymore. It keeps me up at night sometimes, I just keep thinking about all the bad in the world and it gets me angry and sad. I know this sounds just whiny and overreacting, but I just want help on how to deal with this. I sometimes get to the point where I end up hurting myself physically because I'm so frustrated with everything. I don't understand why I am so deeply affected by things I read/see in the news because it's not happening to me. It's not like someone I know was murdered, so why is my mind making such a big deal out of it?
I'm almost 100% positive I don't have clinical depression, I just don't know what's up.
Again, sorry if this sounds whiny and like I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but I just want some help.

I am glad you are saying how you feel.  This is good not silly or whinny.  There are many things in this world that happen to good people.  It has always been and will always be.  Sad isn't it?  But, truthful.  I always wanted to help people and make the world a better place.  You can start concentrating on what you can do to make the world a better place now.  Start a club.  Find something that interests you and you are passionate about.  If you love animals then do donations for dogs, or something for children.  You might be suprised how many donations you get, makes you feel good that you are helping (even if just a little-means a lot!).  I became a nurse and I can't change everything but I can touch every single patient I have in someway to make their day better.  There are lots of things we can all do to make things a little better for many people.  Use your amazing heart to change things and make a difference.  I also have a 12 yr son that is ill and getting on here and helping others makes me feel good when I am down.  Even if I help do one thing good (even so very small) it makes me feel good.  Hang in there!  This is your time to shine!

Sometimes it is kinda nice to write how you feel and where you can just be you.  People write you back for who you are and really want to hear what you have to say.  People on here that write back want to be here.  You sound like you have a lot to offer the world.  We need people like you that care!  Can't wait to see what you will do!

Thank you for responding. It's nice knowing that there are always people who care, even if they don't know the first thing about you. I appreciate and will take your advice. I'm so sorry your son is ill, I hope he gets well as soon as possible.
Again, thank you. It really helps me feel better. :)

You don't sound whiny.  You actually sound like what most people should sound like but don't.  YOU CARE.  It is a good thing.  But, you take it to far when it becomes harmful to yourself.
