Alternative To Synthetic Thyroid Therapy

I recently started to see this new GP and he ran a thyroid level test, my TSH level was 11.66, he said that it was very high, and wants to put me on one of those synthetic thyroid pills and I DO NOT want to take that crap.
I was put on the about 10 years ago I didn’t know they were synthetic my doctor at that time ( lied to me ) told me they were a natural hormone replacement therapy but they made me sick, since they were generic I thought I would try the name brand I didn’t get as sick but still got sick I will never take them again.
My mother was put on them as well she also get sick and all most went bald she still has no hair on her legs, arms or armpits her head hair was almost completely gone by the time they figured out the right dosage that was 15 years ago and her hair only partly came back you can still see the bald spots on her head and her other hair on her legs, arms or armpits never came back.
Do you know of any natural therapy that actually works for this? I know I have a problem thyroid but I am firmly against taking any synthetic thyroid hormone

I'm glad your new endo is willing to order more tests and to consider dessicated.  Did he test free T3 and free T4 (or has he ordered these)?  Those two are the actual thyroid hormones and very important in deciding which meds might be best for you.

There's also a new synthetic med out called Tirosint.  It's the same medication as the other synthetics (Synthroid, Levoxyl, generic, etc.), but it comes in a gelcap and doesn't contain the fillers (inactive ingredients) that are in the tablets.  It's often the fillers that make people sick.

I was just rereading your question...it sounds like your mother is undermedicated and has been for years.  If you find a good thyroid doctor, please encourage her to see him, also.  Symptoms should not linger for anywhere near 15 years if her dose really is properly adjusted.

If I were you, I'd ask your endo to order FT3 as well as FT4.  T3 is the biologically active of the thyroid hormones (T4 has to be converted by your body to T3 before it can use it), and inadequate FT3 levels will leave you feeling hypo even if your FT4 is perfect.

It's a shame your mother won't listen.  I had to laugh as I read your comments, though...my mom had Alzheimer's, and I'm more than familiar with wrestling elephants!!!  It's very difficult when you have to become your parent's parent.  Her hair loss could also be due to poor diet, but if her meds are not adjusted properly for her, that could be the reason also.  Keep at her...she may see the light.

My Endo Dr. says that my gland might be clogged hence a new diet " Low Iodine Diet" he wants to get rid of the iodine in my system to see what my gland is really doing. He thought he could also feel a cysts to ,so I have to go for an ultrasound. So I'm getting some real action as for the blood work he's ordered another TSH and a T4 Equilibrium.  He says that that could take 8 weeks for my system to get rid ( so to speak ) of the iodine but he's giving it 6, so at the moment I'm not going to know any more until the end of October.
As for my mother if she is under medicated it's because of the lies they told her. They told her that her poor diet is the reason for her hair loss and since she is not much for going to doctors I can't get her to see an Endocrinologist.
Sometimes I think she has a death wish because of the RA in her spine ( something else she won't take care of ) the only time she'll go to the Dr. is when she's out of her prescriptions.
BTY my mother is 70 so getting her to do anything medically related is like trying to wrestle a rampaging elephant.

I saw my Endocrinologist on Thursday and he said that he wants me to go on this “Low Iodine Diet “ for about 6 weeks, to see where my thyroid is health wise, then from there he said that he still ( if needed ) wants me to go on that synthetic to try. If I do get sick again from it he would go with Westhroid he said that he’s heard of Armour and the problems with the pharmaceutical. At least he’s willing to try other things ( a temp. diet, ultra sound and more testing instead of just a TSH ) where my GP wasn’t.

Westhroid, NatureThroid and Armour are all dessicated porcine thyroid.  Many people do very well on dessicated.  There are those who never do well on symthetics.

NatureThroid and Armour were reformulated in the past year, and many people who had sworn by them previously did not do well on the reformulation.  Many of them have turned to ERFA, which comes from Canada, and find this to be much more like the former Armour. You might want to research Erfa also and check the archives here on the forum for other discussions of it and the other reformulated products.

Thank you for you comment I hunted on line and I found 3 natural Thyroid Therapy Westhroid & Nature-Throid & Armour Thyroid all 3 are FDA regulated so you have to have a doctor perscribe them.
After getting sick off the the synthetic thyroid pills, I did a little digging and found that I am not the only one to get sick from the synthetic thyroid hormone. I found out that some people are sensative to the process that the pharmaceutical companies use to make the synthetic thyroid hormone, and I am one of them.
So I am firmly against ever taking a chemically made thyroid hormone again because it make me sick.

I take a generic form of Synthroid and I haven't had any problems. Given the risks involved with NOT taking thyroid meds, I'd have to say talk to your pharmacist and ask them if they know of a natural alternative.  They know more about meds than most doctors.
