Are hives related to unbalanced thyroid?

I increased my snythroid from .25/.50 every other day to .50, and after about a month or two I woke up with hives and they aren't going away.  I've had them about 2 weeks now!!  Any body fiqure out why they seem to come because of a thyroid problem?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think if you do the gluten free diet with your hubby, two things might happen...1. You might find your sensitivities go down (Mine did!) and 2. Hubby will be feeling less pressured and guilty about having to be such a pain on you eating different food.
I think my garden glove episode came on because my ning-nong friend bought me a focaccia and told me it was gluten-free....(same day as the garden glove problem) Turns out he boo-booed. He told me today, "Oh!Stupid me! I got mixed up! I got you a gluten free piece of cake and I told you the focaccia was gluten-free...I am sorry I wasn't thinking straight!" Grrrrrrrr! So I really think the rash came from eating the wheat product in the focaccia he bought me.

I agree, I think having Hashimoto's is making us all much more sensitive.  I remember gardening a few years back, before I was dx, and I was weeding and the next thing I knew I had hives all on my arms and legs.  This time was wierd though, cuz I couldn't think of anything I did differently, but it was probably something I wouldn;t think twice about that did it.  Anyway the good news, I've been 2 days Hive Free!!  Yeah!  Redheadaussie, hope yours goes away quick!  Mine lasted exactly 2 weeks.

TamraW, thanks for the site.  I know about the gluten intolerence my husband has to watch everything he eats.  I might as well go on the gluten free diet with him! I always thought I had an iron stomach.  Maybe with Hashimoto's our hole system has changed.

Be aware of what you eat. Many of our problems stem from leaky gut syndrome, which then manifests itself throughout our bodies. Hives are a very common auto-immune reaction to what we eat. Be aware of yeast, caffeine, gluten, dairy, corn, sugars, soy, as they can all exacerbate an auto-immune condition.

Here's an article about urticaria, common auto-immune disease that we Hashis get:

Here's an article about leaky gut syndrome, a condition that all Hashis need to be aware of: http://www.leakygut.co.uk/symptoms.htm

For more the relation to leaky gut syndrome, skin rashes, Hashimoto's, etc. a MUST read book:

I have Hashimoto's and I woke up this morning 3am Aus time, and saw a massive reddish rash on my arm and both legs. Thought, hmmmmmmm...here we go!  I had to really really really think of what I had eaten or done differently yesterday. I eat pretty much the same thing day in day out, being gluten intolerant. I work from home, and rarely go out. THEN it struck me! The new gardening gloves I had bought! I had kept the old left one as it was still good, but the right hand side I used the new one. I had worn shorts in the garden and brushed off some dirt off my thighs, being right handed...You guesed it! It was the gardening gloves! Nothing on my left arm but only on the legs and right forearm and back of hand.
Having Hashimoto's I believe makes me more sensitive to just about everything!
Just thought I would share that experience!
Cheers!

Thanks for the replies.  I really don't have bad ones, they only show up under anything real tight like bra and waist bands , not to much anywhere else. They seem to come and go. Mostly at nite.  I've been taking the claritin which seems to be helping. I was already using perfume and dye free detergent, because my daughter has allergies.  I honestly don't think it was from anything I touched or ate, I haven't done anything different. I can;t recall ever being allergic to any foods.   I was  reading  on the hoshimoto forum here, that others also think hives maybe related to  hoshimoto (just one more symptom added to the list I guess).  It's been almost 2 weeks.  I think after 6 weeks they are considered chronic, OH DEAR GOD pleaseeeee!!  I feel like I need about a weeks sleep.
The strange part is your always waiting for the next shoe to fall so to speak, like when are they going to appear next!
Thanks again redheadaussie and smilerdeb for your replies

Redhead is right.
I got Hives from tomato paste (Dolmios) as it has Lucopene in it.
The natural fresh tomato has it too but something 0.3grams...whereas I made spaghetti bolognaise with pasta sauce, added a tin of tomatoes and wooosh! I went into anaphalactic shock.
I looked at the labels and all up I had consumed 14 grams from the tinned tomatoes and 49.2grams from the spaghetti sauce!

All in all...the Hospital seem to think it was that as in high doses Lucopene (an antioxident) is toxic and affects the Adrenal Gland.
An Allergist appointment coming up will tell me more.

I cannot eat strawberries, seafood, nuts, celery (sap from it) so its not always from the thyroid.
An allergist will steer you in the right direction but it was only Prednisolone( steroid) that eased it and anti-histamines.
The anti-histamines on its own did nothing.
I needed a 7 day course of steroids and after day 3 , they started to go down but mine was pretty severe with welts the size of dinner plates.
The welts looked like someone had poured boiling water over me(blister type).

If you have had them for 2 weeks then you need to get a steroid from the Doctor and get rid of them as each time you get Hives, the reaction is worst than the pervious outbreak.

Dont ignore it.

It may or may not be related to the thyroid issues. Many other things can cause hives. You really need to eliminate the obvious then it may well be the thyroid. I get hives from certain leaves in the garden, like ivy and agapanthus sap. I get hives from certain laundry powders. In hospital I get them every time from the bed sheets as they use huge amounts of bleach in them. Certain foods can give hives. If you have a pet, hives can take years to develop then suddenly you get them. (Happened to my daughter from her cat we'd had for years, allergy test proved it!)
So see if you have had any changes in anything! Then it may well be the thyroid. Before I was diagnosed I used to get incredibly itchy hives at night. I thought it was the Port I was drinking before bedtime, but I got rid of that and it still persisted. Mine was from being hypo and undiagnosed Hashimoto's. But I was not aware of that. I also get hives from laundry powders with certain perfumes etc in it. I got rid of them and the hives eased. I think looking back it was probably a combination of both.

One of the nicest ways to ease them is to make some black tea and let it cool, then dab that on the hives. Don't add cream and sugar though, else you'll just have to drink it!
Cheers!
