Nature Throid also reformulated in 2010 with microcrystalin cellulose as the new filler - same as Armour. Some people do OK on it , some do not.
Some here get a prescription for ERFA brand Canadian dessicated - better for most.
I did not do well on the new formulation. I did not know what happened< I just know I was having thyroid problems, weight gain, hair falling out, dry skin, constipation, sleep, I could go on and on. I am on Levoxyl and like the Synthyroid I was on before, it also is the medicine from Hell for me! Is Nature-throid the best to try to get my Dr. to prescribe? I would give so much to be normal again!
yes there are 3 choices for you right now.
1. ERFA thyroid in Canada is very close to the old Armour. Soon I will have personal experience to share with you as I ordered it and is coming this week ( fingers crossed)
2. Naturthroid/Westroid is available - but at this time a nationally shortage of meds is in the US ( that's why the Canada brand is going on right now)
3. compounding pharmacists are available and mixing what is said to be - close to Armour. I did not like it however - but I take my thyroid sublingually and compound does not work doing it that way.
I am not doing well at all on the new formulation. It makes my liver hurt, I am having extreme night sweats, and my hands are tingling like they used to when I was on Levothyroxine. I hate it and do not know what to do about it. Does annyone have any advice for me. Do you know of another brand that was formulated like the old Armour? Will they change it back?

Why not give Naturethroid a try first? It should be readily available mid to late October in pharmacies. (If you call around, you might find it now) Until then, it can be compounded. If you've done well on desicated in the past, then switching to synthetic t4 with no t3 might not be enough for you. My daughter was on synthroid most of her life (born without a gland) had heart palps (pvc's) on synthroid as she could not convert enough of the t4 into t3 in her body. Switched to Armour and did great until we also got a refill of the reformulated meds. Not good suddenly, w/drastic change in blood! Been on Naturethroid for 8 weeks and doing fantastic!!! Will have blood results on Monday 9/21. She is on 1 grain more of the NT than the Armour and we take it 3 x's per day.You should try to stay as close to what has been working for you. If that has been desicated, then stick with it. Compound if needed until RLC labs get the Naturethroid flowing again.Their formula is great and hypoallergenic.
I'm so glad I saw this, as I was wondering why suddenly my symptoms were returning!
It felt like the beginning before I started taking armour. Huge exhaustion and bloating are the biggest symptoms. Also, had a blood test and I'm more hypo again, even though I'm taking armour thyroid. I'm surpirsed my naturopath didn't know about the formula change. Will definitly consider switching to nature-throid. Never thought I'd even think about taking a synthetic, but will consider that too if things don't improve.
I too experienced emergency side effects from the new formula. I have been taking Armour for 2 yrs. I recently had my dosage and precripion renewed. For 2 weeks I had palpatations, confusion, LOW CONCENTRATION level of thinking, extreme cold extremities and staying awake all night, even with sleep meds. I went to the Dr where my thyroid levels had went from .1 to 9.4. I had abnormal conduction on my ekg and BP was 160/110. I was taken off the new precription and went back on an old prvious refill I had left over. Within 6-7 days the symtoms started deminishing. I feel back to myself. Because of this incident I will be switching to Synthroid. I am afraid of the rick with the formula change to the Amour.
I'm having both hypo and hyper symptoms. I have eye discomfort and shakiness, and I'm also extremely fatigued with muscle aches and headaches. My sleep has also been disrupted and I'm starting to wake up more during the night and I'm getting up far too early.
Yes having Hypo symptoms,
weight gain despite healthy diet
hair loss
scalp psoraisis
tired
achey
etc.
I started having hyper symptoms on the new Armour. I was getting really bad heart palpitations and could not sleep. So I had my doctor switch me to naturthroid. So far so good but I just started it. My health insurance actually covered it they would not cover Armour makes me wonder why? I should you started taking natur-throid? I swallow my pills so I didn't have any issue with that but I did with the hyper symptoms.
I'm really frustrated. I just started the new formula after testing hyper. Now symptoms may or may not be related to hyper or hypo. Heck of a time for a dosage adjustment.
mee too - but no one is biting.
I just thought I'd bump this up, I'm interested to see results.
I voted "hypo", but I guess maybe I should have voted "hypo/hyper". I have a few
hyper symptoms, but mostly hypo. Great idea to take a poll! I had noticed the
difference in the appearance, but didn't realize the formulation had changed as
well.
I voted both and I am worried - regarding this new product.
I find that I have lingering mild hypo symptoms - yet I feel "jittery" at times - especially the morning until lunch time.
I can't say regularly though - today I am sore and a bit tired.
I also do not swollow my Armour and notice it takes a long time to dissolve.
