iIn Nov. 2008 i got bronchitis so bad that I was hospitalized put on steriods thru IV daily for 5 days and sent home with a prescription for Levaquin. After that, I had been on steroids for 2 months, then I started gaining weight. I have always been height/weigt porportionate(thin)-I was 5'10" weight 145 before all the steroids. Almost 2 years later I am still overweight.193lbs. My Doctor just shrugs it off as when you get older your body changes and you don't get the weight off as easily-WHATEVER! I am now 57yrs. old very active and raising my grandchildren 5yrs. & 10 yrs by myself. I eat well, I exercise, I drink adequate water & take vitamins. In March 2010 I went on the HCG diet & lost 23lbs. then plateaued and could not loose anymore-weighing 170 lbs. I gained back 9 lbs.So I currently weigh 179. I would like to know if there is blood work that can be done to see if I have hypothyroidism. Currently I do not have insurance, so how would I go about getting this done at a Lab without the cost of an office visit at the Doctor? Do you think there is a possibility that I could have a thyroid condition & that's why I am not loosing weight? I forgot to mention all my eyebrows just fell out one day and have never grown back. I had nice healthy eyebrows too!
you definitely should be screened for a thyroid condition.
You would have to look for a lab that will test without a doctor's order.....
The minimum testing to have done is TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and FT4 (Free T4 hormone).
If you can afford it, please do add in FT3 (Free T3).
These three will give you a good picture of how your thyroid is doing, and would also indicate if any further testing should be done.
Do you have other symptoms of hypothyroid? Are you cold when others are not? What is your resting heart rate? (if it is very low it could possibly indicate hypot). Are you often very tired, even after a decent sleep?
