Suspect, but don't know because my doctor won't give me a lab order to get tested!!!
I did after RAI and still take calcium/vit D combined a year later.
Basically to help with absorption of thyroxin and also because I am nearing 50 (OMG lol)
Barb - Check your local Health Fair. You don't need a Dr.s orders. That's how I got mine.
Yes, my Vit D is low. I asked my Dr. about it. He told me that 80% of those tested in my geographic area are low. So it must be our climate. I'm taking 2000 D3. Will retest in Nov.
take vitamin d ..plus 10 min of sun ..mine went from 24 to 40 in 2 months .. vitamin d 1000 a day
Yes indeedy! Add it to the list of the many low levels I have! Seems I may have been low on Vit D all my life. Having very poor diet growing up, and trying to keep my arctic skin out of the hot Aussie sun has been detrimental for me!
I spend every weekend in the garden or out in the sunshine but RAI made me low in Vit. D
I was quite surprised.
I am at a good level now and take a maintenance dose of 60mg Calcium/D combined due to this old lady hitting 50 at the end of this year lol.
Mine was quite severe at 9 with normal 32-100 and I had all the symptoms that went along with it and they've gone away with supplement of 50,000iu's a week now.
It was an 18 this Spring. I got it up to a 42 in May with supplements and sunshine. I will get my newest results next week.
Tamra
Was 16 - after 50,000 units a week plus 400 units a day, went to 31 after 3 months.
Will be checked at the end of the month.
My goal is at least 80 - a number of studies show that progression of all types of arthritis is halted at this level. Primary Care Manager thinks merely meeting the minimum level is sufficient. I disagree after extensive reading of the medical literature.
FYI - high levels (close to 100) help you lose weight even if you are hypo.
Yes! My vit D was 25 last time I had it checked, been taking D3 supplements on days that I don't get 20 min sunshine.
My Vit.D was at 8.5 months ago. Been taking 50,000 iu once weekly along with Caltrate (which includes more D). My D came up to 40 but my last test showed as 24 Low. Doc thinks that maybe I'm not absorbing the D. Endocronologist also said that I should take the Calcium and Vit.D TWO hours after any meds I may be taking. She said this can cause a lack of obsorbtion also. We will see what happens after my next blood test. So far, I landed up with osteoporosis and lost up to 10.2% of my bone mass in just one year.
Ugg!
What are the symptoms? I've read that it is common with thyroid situations. Hmmm ...
Mine was 14 at one point, but now I take 50,000 IU/once a month, plus calcium with 200-400 IU of Vitamin D (depends on calcium supplement I use at the time) daily.
I admit I don't get out in the sun much because I'm very heat intolerant, and because skin cancers are real prevalent in my brother.
I also drink a Boost Glucose Control 2-3 times a day for nuitritional supplement. I have some absorption problems (ie previously low B12, etc.) so this has really helped with it.
Current Vitamin D level was 50, but I've read and heard from endo in California that around 60 is best.
I just read an Australian article in a health magazine that says that taking a pill is the best way to get the Vit D everyone needs.
Often depression is a symptom of low Vit D. The hidden symptoms are osteoporosis, heart disease, birth defects, skin cancers and a few others.
It seems without it it can also cause cell degeneration and immune system dysfunction. So is it any wonder many with thyroid problems have low Vit D too!
ChitChat I am going to increase my dose after my stupid endo told me to lower it. I was a measly 33 when I was first tested. (Ref 60- 160) Last test showed me at 163, so he figured I should drop by 1000iu. Ha! 3 months later the depression is starting again! So am bumping my self back up to 2000iu.
Interesting reports ..... Mine was 9 and up to 32 and I think mine is dropping again bcz I get symptoms 4 days after taking my Vit D pill and then they subside after taking it again. So I'm thinking I need it ev. 5 days vs. 7 days and will soon ask for a recheck.
New studies show at our lab in the US that closer to 32 is best but, of course, you need to go by your symptoms and your doc and get him to listen hee hee
32-100 is norm on my lab ref. range.

50,000 iu's / week of Vit D.
I recently found out I was Vit D deficient and was put on 2 capsules 2x's a week -- 125 mg. What are the symptoms of Vit D deficiency? My endo-man never told me!
Thanks!
Yes, I have a Vitamin D deficiency.
Please read the above posts for low D symptoms. My worst was muscle cramping and migraines, plus the feeling I was dying and fluish.
:) Tamra
Mine started with the muscle cramping and I was tested the first time for magnesium levels by my endo and TSH, etc. SHE didn't test for Vit D so there went another 4 mos 'til I went to my Primary Doc who uncovered it and since so so severe, he did heart bloodwork of some sort for enzymes which were fine. He was concerned of damage. Can you imagine. How scary.

I just checked my last blood work up and they didn't even check d...Calcium was ok...
I had more blood drawn today and I still can't get the docs to check my free T3...dude, do I need to write them a manual? I've got like 3 doctors and have had two others and I still can't make them do what I want.
One question...do you have to take vit D away from your synthroid?

They have provided much information!!!
I am not affiliated in any way - just found the site most helpful.
My vitamin D is low.... an interesting thing happened to me after starting supplements. My GP told me it takes most people 6 months to get near normal range (30-60) from where my levels were. In just 6 months I got to 134!! I didn't have any toxicity symptoms and in less than 3 months it's dropped to 74 (near normal).
