Many people who are hypothyroid have vitamin D deficiency, although they aren't exactly "related", as in one causing the other.
As to the lack of periods, that's often a symptom of hypothyroidism, though not necessarily due to lack of estrogen.
I'm wondering if her thyroid treatment is adequate for her. If you have recent thyroid blood tests, could you post them, with the results and reference ranges, so members can help assess her thyroid treatment? Most of us find that just being within the reference ranges on the lab report is not good enough; we have to find a level that is right for "us". Often that means adjusting Free T3 into the upper 1/3 of its range and Free T4 to at least mid range.
Thank you for your helpful information. Stephanie has been taking thyroid neds for years but at her last check up the Dr. said she was low on vitamin D3 and prescribed 5,000 IU per day. The estrogen question comes from the fact she is 24 years old and has had only four or five periods and they were somewhat induced. We are just worried that these all may be intertwined and we aren't seeing the forest thru the trees. Thanks.
Thanks for your concern. Stephanie is under medication to help her thyroid but her recent check-up revealed a vitamin D3 insufficiency. We were wondering whether the two are related or just seperate issues. The doctors has told us to give her 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day and we were concerned about inreaction. We live in Michigan so more sunlight is out of the question for awhile.
Is this a thyroid question?
I haven't read all that much on Downs Syndrome. However, I did read that there is a higher risk for thyroid issues which might be hidden, accelerated or misdiagnosed as an estrogen or vitamin d deficiency. I know Vitamin D does interact with the thyroid but I'm unsure of the interaction with Estrogen.
If you are worried about one of these possible deficiencies definitely make sure to have the doctors test for thyroid disorders too. Remember to ask for Free T3 and T4 as they tend to be a little more reliable at what the thyroid is doing than the standard TSH test.
