It is normal for mentstrul periods to be irregular with thyroid issues.
It is also normal to have a 'thyroid belly' as most of us here do....it is caused by the fat going to the tummy area.
If in doubt, I would get a pregnancy test by having a blood test.
All my kids were babies that showed up negative in urine tests but positive in blood tests......had something to do with the low Estrogen I had.
While you are at it...get your thyroid levels done too....something is out of bablance somewhere.
Thyroid will mess up your periods..I was dx in June Hashi/Hypo and have not had a period since April..Im not complaining im 47 but the thyroid belly drives me mad, i put on 10Kilos and i look nine months pregnant..But i agree with Smilerdeb, have a blood test to check..
wait...what's this about? "It is also normal to have a 'thyroid belly' as most of us here do....it is caused by the fat going to the tummy area. " You're not kidding, right? Omg...might any one else have input on this? See, in 1997 my stomach ballooned with no cause found. I'm talking that 1 to 1-1/2 moths after moving into my purchased house from my relative's place and then visiting them after that time, they couldn't believe how my stomach looked. I had lived with them for almost a year, so it wasn't like they didn't know what my body looked like! At that time, I hadn't gained any weight so it made NO sense whatsoever. Lab tests and ultrasound and upper gi were done with nothing found.
For that matter, I've had a tummy even in High School while being active on swim team, water ballet, biking all over town to jobs, etc. Hell, had a tummy even after army basic training!
But to balloon like that...yes, felt like I looked pregnant which of course wasn't possible.

Lol..aint it just horrible, I was so thin all my life, so im not quite used to the new me, but yes my stomach is unbelievable if i didn't know better i would be scared stiff i was preggy..But thank goodness bloods confirmed Peri- menopause, guess that doesn't help the weight either.. Dawn
i lost 15 lbs in 2 months after i got on the right dose of meds....i rarely hear of people who have "thyroid bellies" that seems odd to me.....also, my estrogen was always really low- my doc put me on birth control pills 8 years ago to regulate my cycle- she thought it was weird for me to have low estrogen and not be- super skinny ect ect..i had the beginning of my thyroid problems way back then and she didnt think that possible b/c i was 20 at the time...... before i was put on the correct dose of meds my menstral cycles were always out of wack and i had close to 2 weeks of PMS before my period. now: i have a cycle VERY VERY regularly with about 1 week of PMS that is moderate. i am no longer on birth control. if you are stressed out about pregnancy with all these thryoid problems- don't have sex --and get yourself healthy -- one less thing to stress over....
P.S have your cortisol checked.!!!...if you are going through a stressful time- your body could be shooting out tons of cortisol- and it may be too much. many times the body just tends to store more fat around the abdominal areas if this is happening. try to stick to a low carb diet (50-60 grams of carbs) and TRY to reduce stress.
If its any consolation, I am starting to lose the 'thyroid belly'.......and even when I went for RAI, the Nuclear department asked me if I was pregnant and I was 48!
But I too had a 'distended stomach' for many years and here was me thinking it was the Coca Cola I drank...go figure lol.
Lo lnow that's scary to be asked..but yes i had a guy look at me in the shop the other day and offer to ge me a basket for my things, funny i know he thought i was pregnant but he made me smile, i thought gee i might just look younger than i am..Renee give up sex..NO.. not quite yet:)
thanks so much ,it was so sweet of you to respond to my problem....im new to this site and i find it to be soo awesome how so many people have so much input, and tons of comments ...i feel a lilttle better. as far as the belly issue goes...ahhh i wanna cry. i always had a great body and a flat stomach so since this thyroid prob ive gained so much wieght. i mean i dont look terribly bad but its so different for me. im tall 5'11'' and my old weight was 160..now im practically 200. thank god im tall so it sorta balances out but...damn its rough. i def have to try and stopstressin my self out. its hard as a mom and all...especially worrying about health issues. :-P but once again thanks so much<3 i can go on and on ...hehe lemme stop here...thanks a bunch***
Accept what comes along...if it isnt broken, dont fix it...if it is broken , TRY and fix it and try and stop stressing lol (yeah , I know it isnt easy!).
This forum is brilliant for support and it made me realise a few years ago that I WASNT crazy or a Hypocrondriac.
I had Graves Disease...full stop.
Get rid of negative people out of yr life.....get rid of stressful situations and try to start saying NO to peoples demands.
You would be amazed at how stressful it is trying to help out people who ask for help but when YOU need it, they are nowhere to be found.
Its a 2 way street in my books...if you take, then you give back.
Thats why I stayed with this Forum.
I took advice and now hopefully helping others by giving back to those who go through the scary bits of thyroid disorders.
Take some time out for you to relax with a book or some music in the day...allow yourself one hour a day if you can.
Works wonders.
Wow! Hi. I have thyroid problems. Its actually low. So Im taking birth control. I missed 6 pills and my period. Could this be because of my thyroid? I took a test and it was negative
What made you think you had too much thyroid med? What is your med and daily dosage? Please post your latest set of thyroid related test data and reference ranges shown on the lab report. Also please tell us about any other symptoms you have.
Why did you say you have hypothyroidism? If you have been tested, please post test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report.
With your symptoms it seems more likely you are hyperthyroid, not hypothyroid. Before anyone decides to do anything for you they are going to want to run some tests. The tests you should request and insist on are the following: TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 (not the same as Total T4 and Total T3, so make sure it is the Frees being tested). You should also be tested for the possibility of Graves' Disease, which causes hyperthyroidism. That test is Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin (TSI).
