How long does it take to see results?

I have bee diagnosed with hypothyroid (my labs were TSH=.787 and T4=.6).  My doctor said on am right on the edge of the normal range, but I have had a lot of symptoms.  My hair is thinning and very dry and brittle, I have gained 10+ pounds that I just can't take off (even with dieting and exercise), my hands and feet swell (sometimes my feet hurt from the swelling), my neck/face is puffy and I have not had a period since Nov., 2007 when I went off my birth control.  These are the major symptoms, but I have others off and on like anxiety and muscle aches.  Anyway, I hate how I look!!  I have never had weight issues and my hair was always thick and shiny.  My doctor has put me on 50mcg. of Levothyroxine.  With all my symtoms, do you think this dose is high enough?  I have been taking the meds for about 5 days and have no noticeable changes.  When should I see changes in my physical appearance? and when should I call the doctor if I have no changes?  Also, would you recommend an endocrinologist rather than a general practioner?  Please advise as soon as possible - I am very anxious about everything.

Arly

Hi- I just wanted to let you both know that you are not going to see any results for 4-6 weeks. My endo dr said it took 7-10 days for the Synthroid to absorb into my body, but really a good month to see if my meds were leveled. I just had a blood test at 4 weeks post op and I had to lower my dose as of Sat. Hang in there... it takes time.

Just wanted to let you know I'm in the same boat. Tons of my hair has fallen out, I'm exhausted all the time, my periods are unpredictable... ( even though they were like clock work 6 yrs. ago )  My T4 was .7 and my Dr. told me that I should be about a 1.3. I started 75 mcg 5 days ago and haven't noticed a THING. In fact I think I have become SO MUCH MORE TIRED. After reading up on all this I am beginning to think the endocrinologist is the way to go. I can't wait till I can get back into my Dr. ( which is almost impossible ) to find out what I can do to feel better. I was so thrilled on Tues. to think that this med was going to 'solve' how crappy I feel. Now I'm just really disapointed, and EXHUASTED!
