Hyperparathyroidism

Dr. Lupo,
I had started seeing a neurologist in 2000 for really bad headaches and tingling in my arm hands, legs and feet.  After several years with them they did some bloodwork on me and told me I needed to see a rheumatologist.  I have been seeing a rheumotologist for what have been rheumatoid arthritis symptoms since April of 2006.  My doctor recently did a dexa scan on me which came back that I have severe osteoporosis.  I am 49.  I have been on blood pressure medicine since 2006.  The last few months my blood pressure has been consistently very high with the lowest number being 148 over 101 and the highest being 186 over 136.  I went to my gp for the high blood pressure who increased my blood pressure medicine.  Those numbers are from after the increase in blood pressure medicine.  The blood pressure will not go down.  While I was at the gp he told me I had an arythmia.  I started talking to my rheumotologist about all of my symptoms and he mentioned I might have a parathyroid problem and sent me for blood work.

4/06 my serum calcium count was 9.3
1/07 it was 9.6
2/08 it was 9.8
9/08 it was 10.0
10/08 it was 10.4 also on 10/08 my pth was 42, my phosphorus was 4.5, my vitamin D was very low and my urine calcium test was 17.3 (what is a normal range for urine calcium?)
11/08 my serum calcium was 9.5, my pth was 43 and my ionized calcium was 5.3.
I just had more bloodwork done yesterday and will know the results on Thursday.

I literally cannot function.  I used to remember everything, now I remember nothing.  I have been very depressed because I feel like ****.  I used to be fun to be around, now I can't even stand myself. Could this be a hyperparathyroid?  I have all of the symptoms except for kidney stones and I believe that I don't have them because I have been taking a herbal supplement twice a day called  Liver and Kidney Cleanse.   Thank you, Kelli

Please please go to parathyroid.com

All the info is plain and clear there and tells you all the mistakes GP's make and terrible consequences of no diagnosis, poor understanding by the worlds medical community and what to actually do about hyperparathyroidism. Good luck.

Welcome.  I do hope the dr answers your question eventually.

I had the disease you're concerned about so I know how off-putting it can make a life.  I had a lot of the classic symptoms but did not have kidney stones.  So I don't know how much of a determinant that is.

I hope the result of your most recent tests show what's going on.  Honestly, I was told not to take anything will going through this kind of testing.  So I would think twice about taking the herbal supplements you mention.

Good luck.
