Hypothyroid and High Blood Pressure Spikes

I was recently diagnosed with Hypothyroid and Hashimotos.  My first TSH (7/15/09) was 90, and as of yesterdy is at 20.4.  I am on .25 of Thyroxine due to the fact that the initial dose of 100 put me into a spin of Hyper and I felt like I was having a heart attack, lost 13 lbs, insomnia, etc. etc.  Given Propranolol (sp? sorry) for heart rate and anxiety.

OK, so for the last 4 nights, as soon as I go to sleep I get these spikes of High Blood Pressure.  At first I thought they were low blood sugar spells.  My endo gave me a glucose meter to test and that was not the case.  I bought a blood pressure monitor and sure enought my blood pressure has been spiking.  Last night I went to the ER and was all was well until I started dozing off to sleep, blood pressure went up and up.  They gave me Adavan and watched me sleep.  That did the trick and leveled out my blood pressure.

The Dr. said it was not anxiety as I am asleep and it has something to do with my autonomic system and thryoid.

Has anyone ever experienced this or high blood pressure with Hypothyroid?  I am feeling really alone and scared.

I agree, I had blood pressure spikes, which was my sign to see the doc...I had hashi's and eventually they found cancer...don't ignore it, get an ultrasound.

No ultrasound yet.  I take the beta blocker 4 times a day.  I am going to set my alarm in the middle of the night to get up and take one.

Thank You.

You have Hashi's.  Have you had an ultrasound or has the doctor palpated your thyroid and felt nodules?  Sometimes, the nodules often associated with Hashi's can "leak" rather than secrete hormones into the bloodstream.  This causes episodes of hyper and can raise BP and increase HR.

I am assuming from the name that propranolol is a beta blocker (usually drugs ending in -olol are beta blockers)???  If so, when do you take it?  Is it possible to take it later in the day or to split the dose so that it's helping you when you go to sleep?

Just a thought...
