I SURVIVED!!!!

Hello everyone! As you can see I survived surgery.  Heres how it went............
We arrived at admissions at 6:30am where we were sent to the 6th floor and I was put in my room. I got into my cute but drafty hospital gown and because I was sooooo tired, I climbed into bed and dh and I watched tv while the nurses came in and out asking questions, filling out papers, putting my bands on and such. I was sooooo hungry and thirsty. At 9:30am they arrived at my door with a bed and I climbed up on it and the sweet nurse covered me in a heated blanket. We went down the elevators to another part of the hospital. I was starting to get pretty nervous but since I was tired I tried to just relax under all of those warm blankets. We got to a point where dh had to leave my side and was instructed to wait in a waiting room. I was then wheeled into a pre-op waiting room and given more blankets and asked tons of other questions. I told them I was nervous and they said they would give me a sedative. I talked with the anathesiologist and she said that in a bit they would take me into the operating room and then they would begin the anathesia. She explained they would put the mask on and I would be asked to count backward from 100 and such. She assured me that they would give me fresh warm blankets because it would be very cold in there. I waited for awhile and then they finally showed up with the sedatives. I must have been really tired or those sedatives work really well, but they knocked me clean out! I was already asleep from the sedatives before I even made it into the OR and before the actual anathesia!
The next thing I knew I was waking up in the OR and vomiting all over. It was more of a blur though and they must have given me something else because the next thing I knew 2 hours had passed and I was waking up in the recovery room. The first thing I noticed was how sore my throat was and that I had TERRIBLE chest congestion. I kept trying to cough something up. I feel to sleep off and on and they took me back to my room. Dh was standing in the hallway as I went down to my room. He asked if they told me anything about the surgery and I told him no. Then he said what I wanted to hear............."Honey, he said it was not cancer!". Oh my was I relieved! They had a pathologist look at the nodule as the surgeon took it out and he said no signs of cancer. Because of this the surgeon did not take the entire gland out, just the left side and part of the middle. He looked over the right side for other nodules and signs and found nothing. While I am thrilled that they did not find cancer, I was a little upset with my doctor because I made it perfectly clear to him that I wanted the entire the gland out no matter what the pathologist said. I am still pretty upset about this...........BUT I prayed to God to guide the doctor and to take care of me, and if this is what happened than I have to believe that not taking the whole thing was what was suppose to happen. I knew I was in God's hands and I feel like everything that went on in there was his doing, so how can I really be mad, ya know? Naturally I am elated that it was not cancer, however they send it off to 3 other places to get 4 opinions in all, so the final report won't be ready for another week. Still, knowing the first pathologist was sure enough that was not cancer that he recommended leaving the other half of my gland, makes me feel like the others will also find no signs of cancer. I am very very very happy that they found no cancer.......oh I am soooooooo happy.
I stayed in the hospital last night and was released this afternoon. I have been very sore not only in my throat but throughout my entire body. I have still be having terrible chest congestion and I try to cough it up whenever I can. The doctor said it was just the irritation of the tube and the anathesia settling in my lungs. Every muscle in my body feels stiff and sore and I am not sure what this from. They took my drain out this morning and the whole area around it is still numb but the doctor didn't seem to worried about that either. I have been instructed to eat soft foods for a few days and to take it easy. Oh and I also have to keep my head elevated at a minimum of 30% when I lay down. I have so much chest congestion however, that I keep my upper body sitting straight up. Over all I just feel tired, sore and like I have been in a car wreck. It isn't unbareable though. He gave me some prescription pain pills and I start my thyroid meds tomorrow. I have this huge piece of tape over my incision that I have to keep dry and leave in place until my follow up appointment next Tuesday. I also can not drive until he releases me to do so.
Well, anyway, sorry this post was so long. I just wanted to share with yall the great news and thank you all sooooooo much for your prayers and encouragement. Our Lord loves us sooo much and I totally felt like he was holding me in his arms the entire time. I still can't wrap my mind around what all God has done for me these past 24 hours, he is truly amazing!!!!!!

Hey, Sweetie :)

So glad you're feeling better!  Going to the Mall ALWAYS helps!  Relax about the final report.  You've already been through so much, it's time to take a breath.  You had a frozen section (biopsy during surgery brought down to a lab for quick analysis), correct?  That was benign, so you should be fine.  When do you get the results??

Hugs,

Shari

Thanks everyone! I will admit I am getting a tiny nervous about getting the final report, but the fact that the 1st pathologist says it is not cancer does make me feel better. I am just trusting in God through all of this.

Today I feel much better. I am not as sore and the chest congestion has decreased. My throat is not near as sore as it was yesterday or even last night. I even went on a short trip to the mall with my mother. We only walked around for about 30 minutes but still it was something.

I'm SO happy for you!  I actually posted on your old thread, hoping to hear an update and how you were!  That is EXCELLENT news!

It is likely that your body aches are more to do with your tension prior to surgery.  I'm sure that there was lots of tension even days before the surgery.  Hopefully, after a good night's sleep at home, you're feeling better today.

Thank you for your entire story as it is helping me since I am also to go through this shortly myself.  I'm to have my consult with the surgeon on the 30th of September and in reading your posts the night before your surgery, I was thinking...."I'm already feeling what it is that you are describing!"  So, hearing that your story and the details (minus the vomiting of course *grin*), sounds like it's not horrible to go through.

Keep us updated as to how you are doing!!!  Best of wishes!

So glad to hear from you, and that everything went well.   The no cancer news is wonderful!!

Didn't I tell you those warm blankets and IV meds were great?  I didn't count backwards either.  Probably because I was OUT before they even started counting!!  ;-)

So glad to hear no cancer. I can only guess that the rest of your body hurts from the tension from before the seditive. Feel better soon.
