Is It Really Graves Disease

Dear Doctor

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease approximately a year ago and was prescribed Carbimazole. After each visit to the hospital and various blood tests my thyroid levels were showing improvement and my doseage was decreased accordingly.

Currently I am taking 5mg every other day but have started to feel unwell again. I have been back to my doctor on a couple of occasions now and have had the thyroid blood tests which have come back as normal within the levels. I have also had a glucose blood test a cortosine blood test and ecg and a 24 hour urine test, the latter 2 of which I am still awaiting results.

As the thyroid I have been told is normal I am assuming that it is something else? My legs feel weak like jelly and there is a tingling sensation in them, I am experiencing diarreah although not constantly and have had palpatations which now seem to have passed.

This episode just seem to turn up one morning, I had been feeling OK but had been struck down with a really bad cold which took weeks to clear.

I'm not sure what your thoughts are on these symptoms but I just want to start feeling better again.

Many thanks for your response.

Hi Ann

Probably about 10 weeks to be honest, you feel really horrible at first never ending symptoms  but they do get it under control in the end. I assume you have not seen an endocrinologist yet?

He / she will monitor your thyroid levels and adjust your doseage of Carbimazole accordingly.

The only thing that I have found however is that a thyroid condition takes on many forms of illness and it is easy to blame everything on the thyroid. I assume you are in the UK but if you really do feel unwell go and see your doctor as soon as possible because it could be something completely unrelated to the thyroid that needs alternative treatment.

I hope it all works out for you.
