Is There Recovery After A Thyroidectomy?

Like so many I see out there I have the all to similar problem... feel awful after a complete thyroidectomy 1 1/2 years ago, weight gain, depression, soft peely nails, weird new allergies, poor concentration and memory, hair loss, muscle loss and muscle cramps and on and on.  My most recent blood test shows T3 Free in range at 3.2, TSH low .14 and T4 Free in range at 1.6 so what could possibly be wrong?!!  My endocrinologist suggested counseling!  She reduced my Levothyroxine to a tad less than 112mcg and continue 5mcg of liothyronine (cytomel)  I was a strong very athletic woman before this surgery, now I cannot do my basic chores..just barely make it to work each day and home again.  Why is this so difficult to figure out?

What range did your lab use for the free t3? If it is the range of 2.3-4.2,  then you are about mid normal range. Your Free T4 at a 1.6 is a little high, mid normal range would be 1.3. Maybe now that your doctor lowered your t4 you might feel a little better. Keep an eye on your T3 levels, as you might want to ask for a boost in that.
PS- you cannot look at your tsh levels when on a t3 medicine, because it will supress your tsh and make you look lower than it really is.

Sounds like what you need is a good thyroid doctor that will treat you clinically by testing and adjusting FT3 and FT4 as necessary to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by resultant TSH.  Symptom relief should be all important, not test results.  Test results are valuable mainly as indicators during diagnosis and then afterward to track FT3 and FT4 as meds are adjusted to relieve symptoms.

I think you can gain some good insight to clinical treatment by reading this link written by a good thyroid doctor  for patients that he is consulting with from a distance.  The letter is sent to the PCP of the patient to help guide treatment.

thanks for the answer...it is in that range I believe.  I don't understand the emphasis on the TSH but it is the on;y reason she changed anything.  And I did ask for an increase in the T3 (cytomel?) but she didn't want to change it.
