Is something wrong with my thyroid?

Often when I cough I can feel something almost "pop out" of my neck on my left side right next to my esophagus, it causes quite a bit of pain. The only way for my to relieve the pain is for me to press on the protruding  lump, if this is my thyroid protruding why is it doing so and is it a concern? I'm a health 18 year old male

Have a glass of water ready, with your head tilted back, hold your fingers covering each side just above the collar bone, below your adams apple, swallow some water, you will feel something moving up and down as you swallow, this is your thyroid, if the lump you feel moves up and down with the thyroid, then your thyroid is enlarged, don't get upset, this happens to many, but you should see an MD to diagnose this condition and treat it, if the lump you feel remains still while the thyroid moves, then it is not the thyroid, although you should see an md regardless.
