Is there something else a doctor can prescribe to help me drop weight in addition to the Synthroid?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid disease in late June. With the normal range being 0.350-5.500, my thyroid was extremely under active with a TSH value of 140.531, the highest my doctor had ever seen. He immediately started me on the hormone with the lowest dose gradually increasing the amount on a weekly basis to avoid any side effects. I was about 75 lbs over weight at time of diagnosis, these happened over a 5 year stretch while in college. At first I thought it was stress and the college life weighing in on me, literally, after I started noticing my hair thinning, the constant dry skin, and intolerance to the cold I did a little research and began to suspect that I had a thyroid issue but hadn't gone to get it checked, I tried natural supplements but didn't see results. Finally after being exhausted on a daily basis I brought my butt to the Doctor's office. I HATE going to the doctors. I don't have a poor diet and exercise 4-5 times a week, I cannot drop the weight. It's becoming extremely frustrating, I'm not sure if I'm being impatient or if I will stay this heavy forever.

With that being said, I was curious if it is common for people to be prescribed a weight loss drug to help the weight loss process. If not, what else can I do??? I'm in the process of finding a new doctor at the moment so I would like to go into an office knowing a little more.

I was in the same dilemma as you and finally went to a Naturopath who went through my diet, blah, blah, etc and found that I also had a hormonal imbalance, very high cortisol levels, adrenal exhaustion, on top of the thyroid condition and all these factors were contributing to my not being able to lose lbs. Well, he started me off on some natural hormones and I lost 15 lbs, plateaued and need to lose 15 more now. But yes I've always been lean & active (worked out with an athlete friend with her intense program), exercised 12 hrs/week, always ate low fat  and would always bother me whenever retarded Doctors would say that- "Oh you just need to eat less & exercise more", in that oh so condescending way. But yes it is difficult losing with a thyroid issue, though I'm going to keep trying.

If I were you I'd look for a Naturopath who will actually work in conjunction with your regular MD? Maybe you might even have other factors that are "thwarting" your weight loss? I don't know but good luck.

Most Docotrs/Endos will not prescribe a weight loss drug/med for the reason being that once your levels are stable and within range, he will want to see if you can lose it naturally by exersise and diet.
I gained 16 kilograms prior to RAI (I was Hyperhtyroid and Graves)and since RAI and since my levels have been within range, I have lost 6 kilograms (2.2lbs = 1 kg).
Thats not from overly exersising but watching what I eat and eating plenty of fruit.

I'm sorry but there is no quick fix for weight loss.
Been there, done that.....was on the tredmill morning and night and lost Zilch (zero) whilst levels werent stable.
