Ok,
Some of you may remember me and some may not. I have a partially cystic/partially solid 3.0mm mass on my right side of the thyroid. I am scheduled to have this surgically removed next Wednesday and boy am I nervous! The doc thought it to be ok to tell me "I have gotten really good with this procedure over the years, in fact there has only been one incident that I can recall where I accidentally pierced the patients volca chords during surgery. She was without a voice for 10 months. After 10 months of other procedures and vocal training she now has a voice, a raspy one but she still has a voice, I could'nt sleep for like 3 days after that incident". "Sometimes, I also piece nerves. BUT I am usually able to repair these nerves before fininshing the procedure so there is no need to discuss with the patient". These things have REALLY REALLY scared me. This is my FIRST surgery and to hear things like "I accidentally" does not comfort me at all. Am I rightfully apprhensive about this surgery or should I brush that stuff off like nothing? Any tips or advice?

See, being an idiot is NOT only reserved for endos! Thank goodness for the survival of the species that there are a few of us out there who actually let common sense and reason play into our medical decisions.
Ya don't think?! Sheesh!!!!!!!!
The (idiot) pediatrician came up with it because he's an antibiotic-pusher. My son had a stuffy nose and, despite my son explaining it was from allergies and he had run out of his Allegra, the idiot said "nope, it's a sinus infection and the drainage is making you nauseated and causing stomach pains" Yeah, mom turned into crabby-mom and insisted on a GI consult. Sure enough, inflamed gallbladder with adhesions to the liver. Our surgeon (yes, the same one who did all the thyroid surgeries for the family) said it was a complete mess and she couldn't believe it was in a 15-year old but then she remembered whose son he is. :-) (funny surgeon)
I don't think all of the antibiotics in the world would have solved that little issue.
I like the way you think, utah. LOL
Stomach pains from sinus infections? What? How did any one come to THAT conclusion? I'm baffledd.
Haven't seen that DVD, but now I think I'm going to have to find it.
Hmmmmm . . . maybe you should include a copy of that post and a bill *to her* for every time you haven't been able to deal directly with her. Tell her you are going to apply all of that money towards a real doctor. Oh, and include a copy of the DVD "The Doctor" too.
Hey, maybe I'll go out and buy a few copies of it too and send it to a few quacks I know! Like the Chief of Endocrinology that I fired, my son's pediatrician who said his stomach pains were "a sinus infection" (funny, removing the gallbladder made them better); or how about that jerk that gave me a HUGE migraine last week with his nasty little laser beam and "take a pain pill and you'll be just fine for dinner tonight" comment.
Maybe I'll buy a *case* of the DVDs. He, he, he.
That's with or without labs for me. That's why I just fired her. Too bad she doesn't know it yet. But am really looking forward to telling her. Just wish I could actually talk to "her" instead of sending her a message. Guess if you make $300 every 30 minutes you can have someone do your talking.
Oh, but I didn't run labs. Darn it. Actually I have no idea how much I pay - I kind of go into a mental fog when the insurance bills come, mutter and cry, and write out a check.
Yeah, time to raise my rates. :-)
$95?!? Is that all you pay? I pay $300/visit.
I don't have any of those letters but I guarantee you by now I'm an expert on symptoms of hyper, hypo, and RAI.
BKL: Hey, between all of us we have way more letters than any silly little endo. I'll throw in my AS, BS, and MPA if that helps at all! :-) Now each of you owes me $95 for a consultation. Oh, and none of us have *real* problems - they are just in our heads. That's why we have the tinfoil. LOL
Trica: I had the surgery twice. Peace of cake for me. Talk to the anesthesiologist before your surgery and tell him/her you want a *small* tube - that's usually where the sore throat feeling comes from.
Cheryl - love the Extreme Makeover Tater Edition. :-)
Yeah - headache is gone. Wahoo (still going to poke his healthy, white eye)
Had an appointment today with my regular doctor to see if he would give me a referral to another Endo since my appointment didn't go so well with the one endo last week. She says my thyroid is in remission and I shouldn't be feeling they way I have been feeling. and I should think about acupunture. My regular doctor agreed with me and hopefully I will be seeing a new Endo soon for a second opinion. I'll keep you guys posted on the out come.
No appointments this week, however I want to wish the best for fellow thyroidians who has to deal with the nuts this week.
I saw we start our own endo service. We know more than they do it seems. We just don't have all those letters behind our name.
Have a good week everyone
Just want to wish you all the luck with your trip to they Mayo Clinic have heard wonderful thing about them and cant wait to hear your results.
Thank you! It's kind of hard to believe that it doesn't hurt after being cut across the neck. Well, from the surgeon that has had it done anyway. Thanks for sharing, that helps to get it from experience. Would it help to sip on liquid tylenol as if you had your tonsils out?
I had tt two weeks ago. The sore throat was horrible, that is true. It lasted a few days. I used pain meds in the hospital the day of my surgery only. The next day I went home and only used two pain killers at home the day I came home. After that, I only took extra strength Tylenol.
No appt. this week. Just getting ready for next Tuesday. I had my pre op on Friday, Thought it was kind of strange to have pre op 10 days before surgery, but oh well. The surgeon told me that it shouldn't be too painful, more like a sore throat and the I can probably get away with just taking advil. ANY TRUTH TO THAT WITH A TT.?
Well I don't have an appointment this week but I leave for the Mayo Clinic a week from today. I will be counting down the days. Hope they can help me. Good luck to all on this weeks poking and proding.

My mom, too, came with me for my f/u appt with my thyroid doctors the week she stayed with me after surgery!!!! first time for me, too, in 30yrs and what was really bizarre is that my Dr. was her Dr. before she moved 10yrs ago .. so she got to say hello. Was nice to have her with me .. you ENJOY your day next week ok!?

Today I have an appt with the holistic MD to go over the latest round of test results. Had a stool test to check for malabsorbtion and parasites. Lovely, huh? Also had ALL my reproductive hormones tested (finally!) and get those back today along with my latest iron, vit D and B12 results.
Mom's coming with me today, as we'd planned a girls day but I'd forgotten about the appt. We're working around it. This is the first time she's been to a dr's appt with me in 30 years! LOL
On Wed, I have an appt with the GI. This is the guy who wouldn't return my calls after I ended up in the ER in December. Not really sure why I'm keeping the appt other than to rip him a new one. Will be wearing my tin foil hat and most likely beating him over the head with a chicken. Ba-kak!
Thursday I go see the evil eye doctor who said I would be just fine with one Lortab. I'll take his healthy, white eye and . . . nahhhh - that's just the ONGOING MIGRAINE talking. grrrrrrrr. Someone should tell Haliburton how effective a laser repeatedly in the eye is for torture - oh, wait?!?!
Oh, and Friday I take my son with the only remaining thyroid in the family to his endo to order thyroid tests and an ultrasound - just to check it out.
-back to the ice pack-
hugs to y'all
No I have to ax the nickname for the cat. Either way It's all good!!
