Mild Hyperthyroidism In Pregnancy and treatments

I am 10 weeks pregnant. Last week was my first doctors visit. I have been feeling great, no nausea, only mild fatigue and the occasional heartburn. Today I got a call from the nurse with the results of my tests. She says that my thyroid levels are slightly high at 3.8 and they would like me to be under 3.0 saying that they would be thrilled if I was at a 2.8. I have no idea what any of that even means because I have heard it to be normal in non-pregnant adults for the levels to be as high as 4.5. I am feeling absolutely fine and have never been diagnosed with thyroid problems in the past. In fact, I am pretty overweight just due to not dieting or exercising like I should have been.

They prescribed me the lowest dosage of Synthroid available. I cannot for the life of me understand why they would give this to me having a slightly overactive thyroid because I am under the impression that it is for people with underactive thyroids. I don't want to take any unnecessary medications while I am pregnant but I am also nervous at what could happen should I not take any medication. Is this something that could clear up on its own? Did they prescribe me the wrong drug? I have only been able to find things on the internet pertaining to people with very severe hyperthyroidism so I don't know the effects of just letting this ride out at least until my next dr. appt. in 3 weeks.

Your TSH level shows your thyroid to be UNDERACTIVE...not overactive.
Ask what yr FT3 and FT4 was and post here.
It is normal for the thyroid to go a little off balance when pregnant and usually it sttles down again after the birth.
If you dont take the thyroid med, it could affect your pregnancy and foetus and while you have a TSH of 3.8, it would be wise to keep getting checked by your Doctor every 4-6 weeks in case you need the dosage lowered/increased.
I am not too sure about underactive thyroid whilst pregnant but do know that if you have an overactive thyroid (very low TSH) then you are at risk of miscarraige or your baby being born with thyroid problems.
Make an appointment with your Doctor to discuss your thyroid situation.
I am sure everything will be fine with your pregnancy and make sure you are seen by your Doctor regulary.
