hahaha.  Thanks Stella!

it is not always an excellent science!    And I am very fallible.  I fall off the wagon every now and then (particularly when I travel for work - which is pretty frequently).  But I just brush off my filthy (and very scarred) knees and attempt to scramble back on again.

I am using the medhelp food tracker.  this is very useful both in planning meals and recording and monitoring what is eating.  Realising and monitorign the effect on my blood sugars is also very motivating.  I now know that both carbs and calories count in keeping my sugars stable.  Calorie intakes greater than 2000 calories tend to send my sugars higher, regardless of how many carbs I eat.  But my optimal carb level is < 70 g/day at the monent, combined with about 2000 calories of total food.

I lost about 6 kg last year by using low carb.  Despite indulging quite badly over Christmas I did not gain it back (well, rather, the 2 kg that I apparently gained disappeared immediately once I got back onto the diet).  Now my first week back on the diet and it looks like I'll lose about 2 lbs.  I am so hooked on this diet.

Here I am diabetic and my numbers are now completely normal (usually < 100).  And on a 'normal' diet I was getting numbers well in the diabetic range.  Me who could never ever ever lose weight without starving am finally able to lose weight, and still to eat!  I am trying to get pregnant again so having good numbers is super critical.

Here I am like a religous fanatic here preaching to everyone.  Honestly, I am so stoked and empowered by finally having found a way of eating that really and truely works for me.  I still have about 12 kg to go, but now finally I know how I can do it!

Ok, it may not work for everyone, but I reckon it could work for a fair few.  This way of eating is not so painful.  I get to eat all the rich fatty foods, just have to avoid the sweet ones.

I'm also using a thryoid support supplement by a company called Now.  My sisters told me it was great and made a huge difference to their energy levels.  Finally I'm trying it properly (was able to order it online) and I also think it makes a difference.

So everything is going great for me.  Anyone is welcome to check out my food tracker.  Note: Not all days are on target for carbs and calories and I'm definitely not perfect.

Well I may need to get with Sally and MM to get up to speed more next week.

I went to the doctor  and have gained 5 more pounds since the 1st. I am ALWAYS hungry.

I'm not doing well on this but dont want to give up. I may need some better food ideas.

I feel good thyroid wise... no change to how I always feel. A little tired but I have been traveling for my "paid " job LOL - and that is really taking a toll on me.

Still haven't felt refreshed since I got back from Orlando.

Thanks for the feedback. I hadn't thought about it before, but tomatoes give me horrible heartburn -so I usually avoid them. (-And I'm a spice wimp, so I don't eat peppers either.)

Red-I hear you about reading labels accurately! -I make a point not to buy coffee creamer with artificial sugars, but every now and then I come across one with sneaky labeling. Puh. I've discovered the same thing about "fat-free" and "low gluten/ low wheat. Yup, they've got us by the short hairs and they know it! :P ~MM

I'm not part of the trying to stay off gluten as I am always off gluten, but just thought I would talk about my accidental intake of gluten this week

I normally avoid gluten like the plague as I am true gluten intolerant and wheat intolerant as well (they are two separate things) I bought a loaf of bread which I read to be wheat free, gluten free. After a couple of days, my tummy started bloating, my brain got worse fogginess, felt lousy, constipation, intestines ached like a knife in it....so I got the packet and read the ingredients......DUMMY ME!!!!! It said LESS wheat and low gluten...I was obviously in a thyroid flunk that day of buying it! ( I was actually having a very stressful day and obviously misread it)

I pay the price each time I eat gluten from rye, wheat, barley and oats.....sigh....

So keep up the work of not eating gluten...because I KNOW it makes a difference!

Potatoes are the nightshade family (includes tomatoes and capsicums, as well as potatoes).  This family of vegetables/fruits contains some very poisonous members, as well as those we routinely eat.

Some people are sensitive to nightshades. (you can google nightshade sensitivity).  My sister gets the symptoms you describe from eating tomatoes.  My twin sister and I both react to these foods with asthma.

Probably not a coincidence.  Give yourself a week to recover, then try the potatoes again. If you get the same reaction, probably is cause and effect.

I forgot...A weirdness...I've been off potatoes since Jan 2, and fell off the wagon Monday night and ate a regular Mac french fry.... All Tuesday, I dealt with unexplainably sore joints (a couple finger joints, right knee, ankles, sore neck and back muscles) and was very tired despite sleeping well...My hands also were red as if I'd plunged them into hot water...Coincidence or cause? Hmmm...~MM

Hi!
So far, so good...More energy, less hungry, and food craving are almost gone (I'd been craving seafood with lemon juice and corn anything in a really bad way...Weird, huh?)
I am on a gluten-free, modified carb elimination diet -so basically, I can have fish, organic beef and chicken, and pork (limited) that is in any form other than fried. I can have almost any veggie (was eating corn until it was pointed out the amount of sugars it contains) or fruit, but cannot have citrus (temporary), potatoes, tomatoes, pasta (wheat flour), wheat, rye, soy, and oatmeal. I'm supposed to limit eggs, and no dairy or chocolate (!).
So, I've exchanged white rice for brown,am using stevia and xylitol for sugar in my tea, use sesame crackers or celery spread with hazelnut butter for crunchy snacks, I've made bread and pancakes from gluten-free flour, (even made banana syrup with white grape juice and pureed bananas -I'm going to try making blackberry syrup next!) and have used a variety of squashes for side dishes. (Ever seen spaghetti squash? It has noodle-like squash meat and is pretty good in place of pasta or in a tossed salad.)
My weight loss is bouncing around, but it appears I've lost 3-5 lbs. Oh, I'm drinking lots of iced tea and water...Jello from Knox gelatin and fruit juice isn't bad either! :)
I get my labs done today, so we'll see....~MM

Hi,

My thyroid levels are currently pretty good, though with FT3 lower in range than FT4, but both above midpoint.  I don't test TSH, it is always low.  I was taking 155 mcg of ERFA thyroid plus 100 mcg of T4. Anyway, I've decided to stop taking the T4 med and replace it with ERFA to see if my FT3 will go up a tad.  So I've replaced the 100 mcg of T4 with 60 mcg of EFRA to give a total ERFA dose of 215 mcg of ERFA.

I fell off the gluten free low carb wagon badly over Christmas and New Year and even with my recent trip to HK and China.  To my great surprise I actually did not gain despite this.  My weight was stable at about 78 - 79 kg, which is where I ended up from my low carbing last year.

As of yesterday I started again.  Gluten Free and Low Carb.  Overnight my weight dropped by 0.7 kg.  Way too short a period to say this is anything but water/normal fluctuations, but I have to say it is a nice motivator.

Todays fasting blood sugar was 76!  Which is totally excellent and much better than my usual 90 - 110 range. My worst fasting over christmas period was 169!

I am eating about 50 - 70 g of carbs/day. No gluten products, next to no grains, minimal to no fruit.

I am feeling pretty good!  Just need to add in more exercise.

Yesterdays food was:
Breakfast: Coffee with milk, fried onion, 3 eggs cooked in coconut oil.
Lunch: Carrots, Green Beans, Stewed Lamb Chop, Coffee with Milk.
Dinner: 2 glasses red wine, handful of cashew nuts, chicharon (Filipino delicacy - crispy pork crackling - it's like chips but made from pork skin - has 29 g of protein and 21 g of fat per 50 g).

The above gave a total calories of 2020, carbs of 62 g, fat of 124 g, and protein of 114 g.  The protein component was actually a bit low.  I was able to calculate from the Bloodsugar 101 website, that considering my target of 70g of carbohydrate, I should be eating around 2000 calories a day, with 131 g each of protein and fat/day.  If I want to lose weight I should reduce the fat to about 70 g/day.

Today's planned food:-
Breakfast:  3 eggs, scrambled with 1/2 cup of chopped parsley.  Coffee.
Snack: 35 g of Honey Roasted Cashews with Macadamias.
Lunch: Chicken thigh, pumpkin, okra cooked in coconut milk.
Dinner: Red wine, fried zucchini slices, topped with chopped tomato, and melted cheese.

I'm doing low glycemic; it's going okay as far as staying in line; however, I'm having some stomach issues, bloating, etc. I eat very little that has refined sugar or flour.  I've switched white rice for brown and use Stevia in place of sugar. My  fasting blood sugar levels have come back down to normal, most mornings.

I've seen about a 3 lb weight loss (bouncing between 3-5 lbs); I guess that's a combination of trying to eat better, and getting back to work after a 2 week Christmas break with all the extra goodies, plus I'm back to walking every day after work.

When I had blood work Nov 1, my thyroid levels were great.  I'm due for them again Feb 1 and I think they are still going to be good; hoping FT3 will be up a bit, but doubt it. As far as symptoms, still some minor ones, but I'd say I'm about as close to euthyroid as I'm ever going to get.
