Hi everyone! Long-time no-see, huh?
Hey, a question about D3 and calcium for those who enjoy a good puzzle and would like to clop their GP in the head for blowing them off...
First of all, a history refresher... About 3 years ago I was hypercalcemic prior to a parathyroid tumor removal (very symptomatic with kidney stones, hypertension, very rapid heart rate, muscle pain, etc.), and after the surgery, I went through "hungry bone syndrome" and was hypocalcemic for about 6 months and experienced the hypo symptoms of tingling, muscle spasms, etc . At the beginning of Nov, 2009, I took large doses of D3 (10,00-15,000 units) for about 2 weeks to up my immune systems while I was surrounded with swine flu victims (I'm a Paramedic). I began to get tingling in my face, arms and legs and brief/ rare episodes of palpitations and I noticed calf cramps happening at night so I stopped it. The tingling was mild an intermittent at the time but has persisted since then. In the last two weeks, it has suddenly escalated to full-body tingling/ buzzing, tinnitis, and heart palpitations multiple times per day with chest tightness that radiates into the front of my neck and a short-of-air feeling. I also seem to be experiencing a bit of fatigue and brief "brain fog" episodes. When palpitating, my heart is pounding, but is not super fast with a rate between 100-120. I'm quite certain it is not anxiety-driven (as Dr suggested -grr) but my calcium level (not ionized) and all thyroid levels show normal ranges.
Additionally, I've had hyper/hypo thyroid issues in the past (no problems for over a year) and during pregnancy had megaloblastic anemia (but folate levels are normal too).
So, at last, the question...Should I badger my Dr for a PTH and an ionized calcium level as well? Has anyone had D3 create a low ionized calcium level or "hungry bone syndrome"?
In my gut, I feel there is something off, but I'm not sure what, and I'm at the point I've had it with DRs who, when they don't find something right away, blow you off with the "anxiety" theme...:( ~MM
