Question about tsh level and meds

I am I. Shock over my last lab test.   Went from perfect tsh to 8.0.  Probably explains why I've been so tired?  Endo wants me to go from my tiny dose to .025. I was on one half of .025.  My question is if I am take too much will my thread itself adjust the natural amount or will it throw me hyper?

Thank you

Most likely you need to go to the 25 mcg as your doctor said, then retest in 5-6 weeks before going up again; however, before we can really help you, we need to see your most recent FT3 and FT4 tests.

I am going to an ENT on tuesday, and am going to ask my PCP to have another round of labs run.

I am exhausted all the time.  I shake uncontrollably.  Hard to focus, and ears ring as well.  I also take androgel (for you guys out there, im using 2 pumps a day).

I am not really sure what my endo tested but she called me and said "are you still only taking 1/2 of a .025 every day?"    "you need to increase it to 1 full .025".   I am thinking I probably need to work my way up to .50.  Maybe the ringing will stop and I will not feel so tired all the time.

I agree.  Remember that high TSH, per se, causes NO symptoms.  It's only when high TSH reflects low FT3 and/or FT4 that you have symptoms.  Please post what you have besides TSH (current) with ranges.  Meds adjustments based on TSH testing only will most likely have you swinging from hypo to hyper.  You have to change your emphasis fom TSH to FT3 and FT4 if you want to feel well.

What are your latest FT3 and FT4 results, along with reference ranges? High TSH is not the cause of your symptoms, it's a lack of FT3 and FT4; you need to know what your actual thyroid levels are.  Adjusting your med dosage based only on TSH is a recipe for disaster.

I agree with LazyMoose; you must figure out how your body reacts to increases in the med; none of us can tell you that.  If  you are sensitive to the med, you might want to go up slowly; or not - that choice must be between you and your doctor.

Low TSH does not always indicate hyper.  My TSH is always "less than" 0.01 and I'm actually hypO, right now.  Again, dosing med based solely on TSH is a recipe for disaster.  I had a doctor who did this and kept me sick for months longer than I would otherwise have been.

"Would it shock my system if I bumped to .50 from .25 or should I do it gradually?"

-Bruce, you learn how your individual body reacts to meds yourself. NOBODY here can say how your body will accept certain brands of thyroid med or increasing doses of it.

I dould that little bit will 'shock' you system. You aren't on much to begin with, and have not mentioned major symptoms like some people here. If you feel a little hyper the first week (with you seem to be worried about), it will be just temporary till you get used to it. Just plan your daily activities accordingly for a few weeks.

Fact: your are hypo, we know this, so something has to be done for you heath. You can go at it gradually if it makes you feel more comforable, many do this on higher doses,  its completely your choice.  It just strings out the time that the dose takes full effect. In the long run the effects are the same, which is to increase your thyroid hormone levels.  Doing nothing accomplishes nothing.

If they tell you to slowly add meeds, then I wonder why one of the endos told me to take .50 right away.  Shouldn't they start you at .25?

I fell asleep during dinner tonight.  I think my wife hates me now.  I don't blame her.  I'm also on two pumps androgel.

Would it shock my system if I bumped to .50 from .25 or should I do it gradually?

If your reading is 8.0 then you need more thyroid.  A low reading such as mine 0.15 is to much for it reads opposite of what you think.  The high number means not enough thyroid and the low reading means to much.

I hope this helps you for it is a low dosage for I am on 150 of snythroid and feel I need t be moved to 125.  I had an ablation and am having a terrible time getting back to normal after 7 years.

You are4 not taking much thyroid medication at all.

"can you describe how you feel when your tsh is out of whack?"

- I am not an average example, had some extreme symptoms, since, in my case, Nature Throid was to blame and my FT4 was completely off the chart with a tsh of 58. I went so hypo, was partially blind one morning for 10 minutes, that was the end of NT for me. But some people dont even feel a tsh that high so they say. Tsh is not comparable person to person.

You are hypo, so just increase your med like the doc says, but at a pace you feel comfortable with.

I dont have t3 on the last test but the result was .810  against .510 maximum.  I feel all the original symptoms.  Maybe I just am not taking enough?  I have ringing ears, very tired, foggy thinking, just want to crawl right in bed.  I am shaky too.  I feel like I have a tiny tiny case of vertigo almost.

can you describe how you feel when your tsh is out of whack?

Hypo and hyper symptoms can be very similar as I found out this spring.

For most people .50 Levo is nothing.............I say most.

If I remember correctly you had many posts earlier this year about weird symptoms on Levo dose changes. More than most people on that small amount. So you are not the 'average' Levo patient, if you are that sensitive to it............Thats why that doc saw no problem starting you at .50.

Like I said, we all need to learn our individual limitations with thyroid med. Most people here have some unusual issue with thyroid, if they didnt, they would not be here in the first place.

What were your free T3 and free T4? Good to know this.

So you need to increase per the doc, but go at a pace that doesnt send you to the moon.

"If you take too much levo, will your body just cut back on how much it naturally produces?"

-Too much of any thyroid med will make you hyper.
You thyroid will not under compensate. If it did people would not go hyper from too much med, as they do. That is why docs are so carefull and error on the undermedicate d side.

I only suggested you ease into the dose because, If I remember, you seem to be very sensetive to Levo in the past.

Remember we are all different and sometimes end up learning our limitations the hard way.

hey guys i appreciate the response.  I wanted to let you know that I had a neurological evaluation the other day and am seeing an ENT on tuesday that is very highly respected.

Up until this point my levels have been pretty good.  I was surprised to find out my level was at 8.0.  The worst it has ever been has been 7.0 when i was first diagnosed.  Up until now it just required me to take 1/2 of .025.   Now I am on day 2 of .025 (the whole tablet) plus a tiny drop of another one (so its probably more like .030)

I am hoping this helps me.  I feel beat down, shaky, and have a terrible high pitch noise in my head.

Should I try to work my way up to 1 tablet and a half?

If you take too much levo, will your body just cut back on how much it naturally produces?

That isn't a huge increase and with you being at a 8.0, you will probably need all of that 25mcg to start feeling better. You are already on 1/2 of the pill and feeling very sluggy. If it were me, I would do as the Dr says and take the whole 25 and get to feeling better. It is very common to feel a little speedy for a few days after an increase anyways.
Let us know how you do and when you are feeling good again! :)

Adjust to the higher amount over, say, 2 - 3 weeks.  Less possibility of temporary med induced hyperness then.
