Thanks everyone for your thoughts....I have TSH values from the past with no other thyroid labs done and I'm trying to correlate that with how I felt at the time. I'll never know if I was actually hypothyroid years ago, but I do know I had TSH's hovering around 3 and slowly gained weight and was depressed all the time. Maybe I'm just looking for something to blame, maybe I've found the answer.
I have central hypothyroidism and when properly treated--my TSH is supposed to be really low--hope when I find a new doctor that he understands this.
TSH neither causes, nor alleviates symptoms. It's a pituitary hormone and it's only "job" is to signal the thyroid to produce hormones.
"however, it seems to give comfort to doctors. LOL" Until it drops out of sight and they find themselves in a tailspin, not knowing what to do....lol
I gained 9kg (20 pounds) in 6 months. TSH was 3.7mU/L. The 3's are bad. :)
Actually, symptoms tell the story best. The whole point of treatment should be symptom relief. Free T3 has been shown in scientific studies to correlate best with symptoms, but Free T4 and TSH did not correlate at all with symptoms. When already taking thyroid meds, TSH is even worse as a diagnostic, to the point that it is almost useless to continue the test; however, it seems to give comfort to doctors. LOL
