Scar and Skin Pigmentation after the surgery

I had two thyroid surgeries a few months ago. I've noticed gradual hyperpigmentation right above and below the scar. The hyperpigmentation sits where the thyroid was. I asked the surgeon and a dermatologist. Either of them knew why it happened. Neither of them had seen anything like this after a thyroid surgery. Does anyone also develop hyperpigmentation around the scar? Thanks.

You could seek the advice of a good dermatologist .... that may be an idea to look into.  Glad to hear about the scar being covered up .. I know how you feel about "the scar" .. mine was covered up alot, too!

Your surgeon's reaction of disbelief is surprising.  I wasn't even sure what hyperpigmentation was so I looked it and surgery is mentioned on the first page I pulled up.  That page, if you're interested is:

Thanks for the replies. Let alone tanning, my neck always gets covered up whenever I am outdoor (because I don't want people to see the scar). The surgeon was in disbelief when I told her that it happened after the surgery. She insisted it was a birth mark.

The only thing I've heard in that regard is if it is exposed to the sun within the first year .. this can happen with any scar that is healing from sun exposure .. were you tanning at all in a tanning bed or sun at all?

Sorry, I have not heard this specifically related to thyroid surgery.  But I looked it up and the page I found says it can happen after any surgery.  That along with a lot of other reasons.  It says you could use bleaching cream but I wouldn't do that.  Especially since your incision is in the area

Perhaps others here have more information for you.
