Thyroid disorders and caffeine

Does caffeine have any effect on the thyroid at all? Had someone who tell me they were diagnosed with Hashi and have totally gone healthy (paleo diet) and do not drink any caffeinated drinks because of its effects on the thyroid.
I do drink coffee and tea daily so not sure if it's messing with my meds at all. While transitioning to a new dose or new med I make sure not to drink coffee immediately after so I don't confuse side effects with meds if I have any...which I haven't so far but just to play it safe.

Hi Rachel, yes. I've been diagnosed Hashi's only recently and from what I've been told caffeine does affect the thyroid's ability to produce its hormones. I'm still new to the whole thing but my lifestyle therapist said for me to cut down or completely cut out tea, coffee, even coca-cola. She says Diet coke is worse than normal standard Coke.

Hope this helps

As far as I know, the jury is sort of out on what caffeine can do to someone's thyroid. (I say this because I can't seem to find good proof from either side of the argument about what it can and can't do.) When my Graves' wasn't under control, I switched to decaf coffee/avoided caffeinated drinks until things stabilized since caffeine hyped me up worse, but since becoming hypo, I haven't noticed a difference in the way I feel drinking coffee or a caffeinated drink. (I have, however, cut back on how much caffeine I consume overall these past few years, so I'm not sure how reliable I am.)
