So... what is the danger of too much synthroid

I am a 38 year old male with hashimotos from my mom... My brother has it as well and was just diagnosed at 35 and has started to gain weight... I eat carefully and exercise 3 times per week by running 3 miles or walking 5 or so... I cannot loose weight. I increased my synthroid dose on my own due to hair loss (small amounts) and very dry skin and lethargy from 125 to 180 and have felt a little of the effect but with a LOT of caloric restriction have lost about 25 lbs for the first time in years I am starting to feel good about me and how I look which is really important to me right now due to the fact that I have become single... Am I gonna die to be skinny? Any suggestions... No one in my family is heavy but me and my mother is a little but maybe like 20 lbs overweight... is having hashimotos a for sure sentence to being overweight? Am I going to burn out my heart doing this? I can sleep no problem...

Thanks,

Drew

First of all, don't blame your poor mom!

Increasing from 125 to 180 is a BIG increase.  Do you have labwork done regularly?  Please post your TSH, free T3 and free T4 and their reference ranges.

Can't answer any of your other questions without some lab results...

Thyroid replacement hormones are NOT diet pills.

And, please keep in mind that the risk of bone issues with long-term usage .. the lowest dose that does the trick and is ok with you and your Dr. is the best dose .. not the one that helps you lose weight in my opinion.

That depends on your labs and how you feel, if you change your meds on your own, it can cause damage to you body, due to the fact that you switch to Hyper and have a whole new set of problems in addition to throwing off your labs and confusing you doctor, you also run the risk of "Thyroid Storm" which can be fatal if not treated, Hashimoto's is an auto immune disease and so is Graves Disease which is at the Hyper end. I would advise discussing the weight and increased dosages with your MD.   Good Luck FTB4
