Stop the Thyroid Madness book

hello, I've seen a few really positive posts about the book Stop the Thyroid Madness book and I was wondering what everyone thinks about it?  I looked it up on the internet and have seen a lot of positive reviews, but I've also seen some that say: stay away from this author...the author doesn't know what she is talking about...be very wary of this author...etc....  Should I look into the book or should I not bother?
thanks

I guess you got it confused. Mary Shomon is NOT the author of STTM book. Janie A. Bowthorpe is.

I'm very sorry I wasted good money on this book. The *so-called* author believes that she is helping, but in reality, it seems more like a ploy for attention. There are much better books available on dessicated thyroid meds and I would hopefully suggest you keep looking.

It did, however, lead me to her website which sells T-shirts and caps and things that no one could possibly need or want. But here again, she has that *need* to be celebrated. There is info on this site which may prove to be helpful, but it isn't her research. I know this first hand. I feel she tends to steal and plagiarize and then turns on a dime, to call it her own work. She doesn't give credit where credit is due; instead, crediting herself for work that is not hers.

I've also noticed that with any inferior review she receives on the book, she'll turn around and comment sourly along with her passe of other supporters. This in itself, is infantile behavior and it shows yet another disturbing quality. Read through the comments yourself, you'll get the picture..

There's a world of good information out there written by reputable authors who are respected for their own work. I prefer to support authentic authors.

Lol Stella....you hit the nail right on the head.
She doesnt mention in her book..people like me.
People who are SO drug sensitive that a T3 med would cause a heart attack for me.
She also doesnt mention that a LOT do well on a T4 med....just as a LOT dont.

I always read the books as a 'guide' to my condition as not the 'be all and end all ' to treatment and cure.

I found some information inaccurate in the book but I also had one thought about the book.
And that was the Author has 'tunnel vision' in regards to thyroid issues.
What may work for one may not work for another and vice versa.
We are all made up of different 'dna' and she basically categorised evryone as the same....when we know that just isnt so.

The book taught me tests to ask for and what hyperthyroidism and Graves was but other than that, any other info I took with a grain of salt....I formed my own opinion on the book and researched in further depth (but not from the book).

I am on the fence with that book. There is some great information in it on basic thyroid knowledge, but on complicated issues - which thyroid situations tend to be with everyone - the Gold Seal of testing STTM promotes is not correct either. God forbid - someone has a pitutiary issues and adds more meds to feel better per her strong words of TSH being bad.

That's not good.

Everyone won't just run out and get a ferritin test from their doctor. basal temps are really not taken into consideration with doctors much either. I read nothing on trying to be a teram with their doctor - only firing them and moving on to someone who will RX Armour ( aka now Naturethroid) now that she is ticked at Forest Pharm

I too am upset with Forest for the change - I had me ill too until I switched to NT - but many still swallow their Armour and do fine on it. Some better now because of the lactose additive.

I think as a thyroid patient myself the information on Free testing with all the forums DO agree no matter what  - those are needed and we fight to get them done. We are able to put in prespective too - that the TSH is really not a reliable test at times either.

She's quite blunt in her book. There is no room for individual preference. She debunks T4 synthetic meds - but many are successful with it. She never discusses Cytomel which is wonderful for many.

Her options are limited - in both her book and her site. I believe more on adding honey over vinager at times - at a doctors appointment. Not beating them up with an STTM book.

I think the book itself is OK to read - but you really need to understand the whole picture with thyroid and know all the resources available, not JUST desiccated thyroid information.

She had a tough situation with thyroid as I - and many others. I want to precieve myself as someone who wants to help regardless of med choices. Not beat them like a dead horse - to fire their doctor - get on natural desiccated - and you'll be fine - skinny and well!

The 2 books I found most informative were Living with Graves Disease and Hyperthyroidism AND living with Hypothyroidism.

I dont agree with a lot that is written in them but at least they got me on the right road to know what I was talking about when I went to an Endo.
Tests etc....medication...symptoms.
Those are basically what I referred to all the time when I was a newbie with Graves and Hyperthyroidism.
Then with RAI and TT, I had to learn the 'other side of the fence' so to speak.
I found them helpful but didnt agree with everything written in them.
They were a starting point for me.....and from then on, I researched all on the net.
I stayed away from any sites on the Internet that promised 'miracle cures'.

Mary Shomon has some interesting things to say in her book, and offers a lot of useful information.  You just have to separate the facts from the opinion and research some of her "facts" for yourself.  However, she has some definite biases and they lurk everywhere, not the slightest bit below the surface.  I would not say the book presents all the options with equal fairness.

I also don't like some of her internet promos, e.g. the "thyroid test package"...a mere $150 for FT3, FT4 and TSH "much cheaper than your local lab".  Well, I get my frees and TSH fo less than $50 at my local lab.
