Super-sad about my weight gain

I am hyperthyroid and was diagnosed in 2007. I was placed on a beta-blocker (inderal from the begining) then within the last year placed on Tapazole (10 mg/once a day). I have went from 130 to 147 lbs and I am super sad. I have been curving my appetite to around 1500 calories a day and working out at least an hour 3 times a week, mainly cardio. My question is did anyone experience anything in this similar to this and how long did it take before you lost weight? I've never been overweight in my life so this is so scary to me....

Hey Bubbles,

I totally understand. I was always thin, I ate like anyone else but I have always been a slender individual until now. I think I am discouraged because back in 07 when I was diagnosed, I mentioned my weight gain to my Endo, and he dismissed it and didn't really hear me out (I think he was looking at the fact I was very thin- I'm 5'7"). (I sometimes feel he is not listening to my needs. I am really seriously considering a new Endo). Now he is telling me to keep a food journal which I have. Just to give you an idea on how I eat, yesterday I only had total about 1,000 calories. (Yogurt, protein bar, fruit, and Lean Cuisines pretty much totaled my day). I just want to go back to how I used to be.

I started out at 130, dropped to like 124 (when I was diagnosed) then it picked back up. I thought it was cute at first when I put on the extra pounds because I was always a stick figure. Now it is making me so sad.

What supplements does your book recommend for hyper? Right now I take a multi-vitamin and that's it...

I am in the same boat as you are.  i was diagnosed hyper with graves disease a year and a half ago.  i have been 132 lbs for the past 10 years never go ing over 135.  then i get this and my weight initially dropped to 122 and the as soon as my endo put me on meds (which is PTU and a beta blocker)  i gained almost 15lbs in one month but more on top of it and now struggle with 146lbs.  Even though my doctor says thatits nt from my meds it clearly from my metabolism going up and down.  i never struggled with this before until this happened - it is def frustrating to say the least

Hi Stella,

Yes I am still on anti-thyroid meds- Tapazole (Methimazole) 10 mg/once a day. And I just got my blood drawn yesterday, so as soon as I know my latest labs I will post.

Hi TryingSmiles, What exactly was your diagnosis?  I am considered Hyperthyroid and have Toxic Multinodular Goiter. This makes me swing back and forth between HyPO and HyPER.

While thyroid certainly plays a role, there is usually a lot more going on that can cause weight gain if you are Hyperthyroidic.  Most people tent to lose weight if they are Hyper and have Graves for instance.  I steadily gained wight over about a 7 year period with no treatment.  I had no idea that the cause of all my problems was related to toxic nodules in my thyroid that were reviled form an Ultrasound I had done.

I would say that I have gained 100 pounds over the last 7 years.  Part of what makes us sick to begin with is our diet lace of some nutrients and heredity, I am no expert but I have read a lot about this over the last 4 months.

In my case I cut out all fast food.  Try to eat gluten free as much as possible and cut way back on the caffeine.  Now that I am eating healthier  my thyroid issues have subsided a bit.  I was on Methimazole but that was making me sick so I am currently not on any beta blockers or anti thyroid meds. I have been taking High Blood Pressure meds for over 10 years.

People that are HyPO tend to gain weight because their metabolism gets slowed way down from the lack of thyroid hormones.  In your case it could be partly due to the anti thyroid med but you need to look at other possibilities also. Often times, especially those of us that are hyPER and still gain weight, there are other issues at play not related to our thyroid condition.  I am apparently "Insulin Resistant"  and have "Metabolic Syndrome"  As much as I would like to blame everything in the world on my thyroid problem, the reality is that I can not blame it all on my poor broken thyroid.

First I needed to take a look at my diet and what I was eating. I cut out all processed foods, everything that included Soy (about 65% of what you eat may contain some amount of a soy byproduct), I cut out all fast food, and now I am trying to stop eating anything with white flower and sugar.

Because I have heard from others that going on a Diabetic diet has helped them I am going to try that. As you can see from my weight tracker, my weight has not changed much since December when I made these big changes but it takes time and it takes daily exercise. You might want to get checked to see if you are insulin resistant, or if you have other similar issues.

I am reading one of Mary Shomon’s books; “Living Well with Graves' Disease and Hyperthyroidism”  There are some great tips in the book and some good explanations.

I am going to see a Naturopath this week to see what I can do about the weight problem as well.  Sometimes Western medicine is limited in their thinking so I personally am willing to try other avenues.

I am sure others withy hyPERthyroidism will comment here about their struggles too. Maybe we can get a good discussion going of the HyPER people that have GAINED weight.

Hope that helps some..
