New to thyroid problems

I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My test is T4 free  0.55 ng/dl   then there is a space and  0.58-1.64. I have bad insurance, hard to get to doc. He prescribed Levothyroxine 50, first day I got sick like flu, did not take the second day until I could check with pharmacy. History of palpitations and irregular heart beat, she said ask dr., a call to dr brought a return call by his nurse to change to 25 mg for 2 weeks, then back to 50. Are these levels for me way under acceptable levels or am I borderline? I am not good with medicines because I tend to read the side effects and worry about some that pertain to mental things. I am on no other meds, 58 years old. I would welcome any advice or info. Thank you.

The result on your T4 free (FT4) test is 0.55, and the numbers following the spaces are the reference (normal) range for the test.  Your result is below the lower end of that range (0.58), which indicates that you are hypothyroid.  I wouldn't consider you borderline.  Thyroid test reference ranges are very flawed.  Many of us find that we have symptoms until FT4 is about midrange.  So, the whole bottom half of the range probably ought to be considered hypo.  Looked at in that light, yours is very low.

If you read the dosing instructions for levo, you will see that starting dose if you are over 50, have a history of a heart arrhythmia or have been hypo for more than a few months is 12.5-25 mcg, increasing as tolerated.  Your body has to get used to having those hormones available again.

Have you tried taking the 25 mcg yet?  It's unusual for a single dose of levo to affect you that quickly.  Levo has to build in your system over several weeks before it changes your levels significantly.  However, some people are sensitive or allergic to the fillers (inactive ingredients) in the tablets.  An immediate reaction usually has more to do with that.

How do you feel?  Do you have many hypo symptoms?

Did your doctor test anything else besides FT4?

Thank you so much for answering so quickly. I researched some on the fillers that you mentioned, and it makes perfect sense. I pick up my new prescription today, and I feel better about trying it, thanks to your post. I do not have any hypo symptoms, except the dry skin, though also an uncomfortable feeling when lying on my pillow at night, around my neck area, like its swollen. I will post update after I try the new dosage. Thank you again, you cannot imagine how much better I feel.
